Vaglio Basilicata between the Plateau and Historic Town Centre
Vaglio Basilicata combines archaeological sites, historic paths and local festival culture. The Serra di Vaglio archaeological site is located in the municipality of Vaglio Basilicata at an altitude of 1,100 metres, on a plateau overlooking the route through the Basento Valley. I Sentieri dell’Acqua Antica comprises two tourist cycling and walking routes of more than 25 kilometres in total, beginning in the historic centre of Vaglio Basilicata and leading to the archaeological parks of Serra and Rossano.

Archaeology from Serra to Rossano
Rossano di Vaglio is considered a confederative sanctuary of the Lucanians. The site was founded around the middle of the 4th century BC near a water source and at a junction of several routes leading to the surrounding indigenous settlements. At the Museo delle Antiche Genti, the archaeological exhibition includes original finds and replicas discovered at the Serra and Rossano sites. The museum in the centre of Vaglio Basilicata has two permanent exhibitions; the municipal administration also presents exhibitions of painting and sculpture every year.
Churches and Paths through the Town Centre
The Chiesa Madre has three naves with round arches and was built during the Renaissance with Romanesque features. A municipal walking tour through the historic centre follows medieval streets, passes gateways and palaces, and continues through a distinctive system of covered passages. The Chiesa di San Giuseppe is located in the fortified town centre behind the cathedral, in the historic centre of Vaglio Basilicata, and dates from the 16th century. At the entrance to the town, a large garden with a fountain lies in front of the Chiesa del Carmine; its portal has an 18th-century round arch.
Routes for Different Daily Plans
The 1.93-kilometre uphill hiking trail Tratturo Serra begins at Piazza dei Caduti, passes through Contrada Braida and leads directly to the excavations of Serra San Bernardo at an altitude of 1,095 metres. The 6.71-kilometre Tratturo Tataseppe–Ciscarella circular route is a longer walk through the landscape, with quiet paths and Mediterranean maquis shrubland; it descends along Contrada Tataseppe and reaches the centre of Vaglio Basilicata. The different types and distances of routes give you a clear basis when you want to combine cultural sightseeing with physical activity.
Uglia: Music, Dance and Regional Products
On Friday evening, young people carry the Uglia through the streets of Vaglio Basilicata accompanied by music; dancing and singing take place along the way. After arriving in the square, the Uglia procession ends with a festival featuring dancing, gastronomic products and wine.
