Viggiano between Sanctuary and Harp

Viggiano brings together religious culture, musical tradition and mountain landscapes in a unique way. The Santuario Basilica Minore del Sacro Monte di Viggiano stands in the Agri Valley on one of the highest mountains in the Apennines, at an altitude of 1,725 metres. You will also encounter the harp in the town itself: seen from above, Piazza San Giovanni XXIII is shaped like this instrument. The Scuola dell’Arpa Viggianese e della Musica was founded in 2008 and recognised by the municipality in 2009 as a cultural institute dedicated to reviving Viggiano’s harp tradition. The Viggiano branch of the Conservatorio „Gesualdo da Venosa“ di Potenza holds lessons at the Villa del Marchese.

The MUVIG shows how closely music and local history are connected. It documents the agricultural and pastoral work, crafts and domestic life of historic Viggiano. The MUVIG is located on the restored ground floor of the Franciscan monastery of Viggiano; the building dates back to 1473. In the historic centre, you will also find small harp bas-reliefs dating from 1858 to 1882 on the portals of some houses and in the keystones of arches. After booking, the Viggiano tourist information office offers a free guided tour of the historic centre.

Mountain trails with varying levels of difficulty

Viggiano offers hikers a network of trails approximately 30,000 metres long. The trails lead to viewpoints above 900 metres and include routes of medium or high difficulty. The Sentiero delle Rupe Rosse is classified as an alpine trail and includes a visit to two caves. The Sentiero di Santa Maria La Preta ends above a rocky outcrop overlooking the Casale stream; a rock church once stood there.

The Torrente-Alli trail begins on the municipal road between Viggiano and Montagna Grande and leads to a narrow gorge with steep rock walls. It is considered suitable exclusively for experienced hikers; appropriate equipment and the accompaniment of park guides are required. The Museo del Lupo at the Fontana dei Pastori focuses on natural history: it is located at an altitude of around 1,400 metres in a beech forest where nature walks are possible. The museum displays stuffed wolves and other animal species from the area and provides information about the Appennino Lucano National Park.

The Fontana dei Pastori Path begins at Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII in Viggiano and leads through forests and a beech forest to the Museo del Lupo and the Fontana dei Pastori at an altitude of around 1,400 metres. Educational sessions are offered at the museum, followed by guided tours in the surrounding forest. The „Felicetta“ trail initially descends to the Casale stream, crosses the watercourse and then climbs towards the Manche area near Felicetta.

Festivals, Pilgrimage Tradition and Winter Experiences

The Festa della Madonna di Maggio includes a procession from Viggiano to the mountain on the first Sunday in May. The historic Antico Tratturo della Madonna di Viggiano led pilgrims through the wooded slopes of the Sacro Monte to the sanctuary. The „Review of the Traditional Harp“ takes place every year in the first days of August. In August, you can taste wines bearing the Terre dell'Alta Val D'Agri designation of origin at the „Vino sotto le stelle“ food festival. The Festa del Ferricello is also held in August, dedicated to Ferricello Viggianese, which has been awarded the DECO designation of origin.

In winter, Montagna Grande di Viggiano adds to the range of activities. It is a winter ski resort on the slopes of Monte di Viggiano. The Montagna Grande ski area has two ski lifts and a conveyor belt serving slopes in beech forests, including a three-kilometre cross-country ski trail. Snow tubing, Nordic walking, sledging and snowshoe hikes are also available; equipment can be rented.
