Melito di Napoli between culture and local history

Melito di Napoli offers several ways to explore culture and local history. These are complemented by the historical importance of the apple, the Annurca variety and the former wine production. The agricultural connections stand alongside the buildings and places of remembrance.

Villa Comunale and Teatro Barone

The Villa Comunale was inaugurated in December 2022 and is named after Rosario Mauriello. It is accessible to people with disabilities, and admission is free.

The Teatro Barone represents a diverse stage programme: it hosts theatre events, shows, musicals and dance performances. It also offers film forums for children as well as projects and initiatives for young people and people with disabilities. The Teatro Barone’s programme thus brings together theatre, musicals, dance and film forums. The building was constructed and opened in 1976.

Churches and historical evidence

The Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie stands out for its symmetrical floor plan in the shape of a Greek cross. A large dome with a lantern crowns the building. The church stands in the centre of Piazza Santo Stefano.

Older periods can be encountered in several other monuments. The Church of Santa Maria di Piedigrotta was built from 1698 to 1776 and contains an altar made entirely of marble. The Brotherhood of Santa Maria di Piedigrotta was founded in 1641 to bury enrolled members of the brotherhood. The foundation of the brotherhood in 1641 therefore predates the start of construction of the Church of Santa Maria di Piedigrotta. The hypogeum of Melito di Napoli was accidentally discovered in 1959 in the area known as Masseria del Monaco. It is a cist grave made of tuff blocks, probably dating from the Roman imperial period, possibly from the 1st or 2nd century AD. The construction period of the Church of Santa Maria di Piedigrotta and the possible dating of the hypogeum thus mark different historical periods.

The municipal library also preserves historical memory: a marble memorial plaque for those who fell in the First World War, made in 1921. The Biblioteca Comunale “Francesco Rossi” offers reading, lending and cultural promotion services. The memorial object thus stands alongside the reading, lending and cultural promotion services of the same institution.

Apple, Annurca and former wine production

Agricultural and craft traditions also form part of the local character. Historically, the apple was an important agricultural product in Melito di Napoli; the Annurca variety is rooted in Melito and the surrounding towns through its DOC origin history. Historically, Melito di Napoli also had wine production. This was associated with the handcrafting of oak barrels; despite industrial quantities, they were made by hand.
