Monte di Procida between the sea, volcanic landscapes and island views

Monte di Procida is located on a headland opposite the island of Procida and is part of the Phlegraean Fields Regional Park. Its elevated position offers panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples and the surrounding area. In this way, the town combines coastal scenery, volcanic character and views of the island surroundings.

Sea, cliffs and volcanic landscapes

The Passeggiata di Torrefumo runs along the sea beside a coastal cliff through an undeveloped area with typical Mediterranean maquis. The rocky cliff also makes the geological development of the Phlegraean Fields visible. In the early 1900s, Johnston-Lavis called it “breccia museo”.

The oldest volcanic products of the Phlegraean Fields can be seen on Acquamorta Beach and along the coast of Marina di Vita Fumo. Marina di Acquamorta is the tourist harbour of Monte di Procida and offers views of the Phlegraean Islands.

Two belvederes offer different vantage points: Belvedere Caduti in Mare provides views of the islands of Procida, Ischia and Ventotene. Belvedere Stupor Mundi is located along the coastline from Capo Miseno to Punta Campanella and offers another viewpoint there.

Villa Matarese and green spaces

Villa Matarese is an early 20th-century building made of tuff. It extends across three levels and an area of 564 m². The villa is surrounded by a garden of approximately 3,600 m² with tall trees and fruit trees.

The building of Villa Matarese is currently closed to the public, while the outdoor area is accessible. The Giardini di Dedalo have a different character: the large green space offers hedge mazes and room for smaller events. It is easily accessible to everyone and free of charge.

History, festivals and local specialities

On the edge of the town centre of ancient Miseno lies the Cappella necropolis. It is located on the ancient road that connected the ancient settlement with Cuma. The site’s historical perspective therefore extends beyond the coast into the history of the Phlegraean Fields.

The Assunta procession on 15 August is a centuries-old tradition. During it, montesic sailors serving in the military carry a statue decorated with votive offerings through the town’s main streets. The Festa patronale dell’Assunta takes place during Ferragosto week, from 13 August to 17 August, and traditionally ends with a fireworks display. The festival also includes the Palio dell’Assunta, a rowing competition featuring traditional montesic gozzi.

Re Casatiello represents a special combination of regional food culture and family life. It is a family competition to make Monte di Procida’s traditional sweet, which is recognised with De.Co. status. Grandparents, parents and grandchildren all take part together.
