Montechiaro: Churches, Trails and Coastal Views

Montechiaro combines the borgo, trails through the hilly countryside and local agriculture with far-reaching views across the peninsula.

Location, Casale and Far-Reaching Views

Montechiaro lies on a ridge separating the area of Vico Equense from that of Meta di Sorrento. A road branching off from the Sorrentina state road takes you to the ancient Casale of Montechiaro in just a few minutes. A path connects the Casale with the ruins of a hunting lodge. From there, the view extends across the entire peninsula and as far as the island of Capri.

Churches and Their History

The Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo stands in the centre of the borgo. Its floor plan follows the shape of a Latin cross: the broad central nave is followed by small side chapels on both sides, a short transept, a dome and a semicircular apse. The church has been documented since 1499; during the pastoral visitations of 1550 and 1584, it appears as a parish church. In May 1775, the parish church was consecrated by Paolino Pace, Bishop of Vico Equense. It is also affiliated with a congregation founded in 1744.

The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie is located at the most scenic point of the Montechiaro promontory. Because of its distinctive Pompeian-red façade, it is also known as Chiesa Rossa. In front of the church is a sea-facing terrace with views of the Gulf of Naples, its islands, Mount Vesuvius and Sorrento.

The Oratorio del Rosario in Montechiaro is also part of the village landscape. Its façade features a ceramic image of profound devotional significance. Palazzo Cosenza is associated with a silk factory operated in the Casale of Montechiaro in the 19th century, which had more than 24 furnaces for processing and producing silk.

Trails between the Casale and the Hunting Lodge

The “Sulla via dei Casini di caccia” route begins in Montechiaro and follows an ancient mule track to Monte S. Angelo. It includes a visit to Azienda Agricola Dubbioso. The hiking trail also leads to the Casino di Caccia di Ferdinando II di Borbone, built at the beginning of the 19th century.

One hike leads from the Piazzetta via Via Sopra la Chiesa and Via Casini to the Casale of Alberi.

Agriculture and Coastal Products

Montechiaro’s agricultural production includes olive oil, wine, lemons and fruit. At Azienda Agricola Dubbioso, you can find typical coastal crops, including Pomodoro di Sorrento, as well as olive trees used to produce DOP olive oil. Azienda Dubbioso is also a shopping stop for the Mercato della Terra in Vico Equense: you will find it at Via Casini 3 in the Montechiaro district.
