Mugnano Di Napoli: History, Landscape and Local Culture

Between Agricultural Landscapes and a Long History

Mugnano di Napoli lies in the sub-system of the Pianura flegrea, a well-drained plain with dark, deep, permeable volcanic soils that are easy to cultivate. The agricultural plains of unit D3 include open arable land as well as local hedgerows, rows of trees and individual trees that are important for biodiversity. The agricultural mosaics of unit D4 comprise traditional, mixed and specialised fruit-tree stands, tree-covered gardens and vineyards. These serve as supplementary habitats, buffer zones and ecological connections to more natural areas. This gives you a townscape in which historical remains stand alongside a distinctly agricultural landscape.

Churches, Chapels and Villas

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista a Carpignano dates from the 5th century and was restored in 1656 and 2004. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta al Trivio dates from the 10th century. The history of the Cappella di S. Maria di Campo D'Isola reaches back even further: its origins are dated to the period from the 8th to the 13th century. These differing dates provide culturally interested travellers with a varied historical framework for exploring Mugnano di Napoli.

More recent and representative buildings also form part of the town's character. The Chiesa dei SS. Alfonso e Luigi is a 20th-century building whose form symbolically resembles a ship sailing towards the sky. Villa Venusio dates from the late 18th century and was built by the Capece Minutolo family. Villa Vulpes dates from the 18th century, has a neoclassical layout and houses a chapel dedicated to Saint Anne.

Archaeological Traces from Prehistory to Antiquity

The Mausoleo Torricelli is a tower-shaped tomb with urn burials from the 1st century AD. The subsequent construction of several buildings around the mausoleum created a fortified farmstead known as Masseria Torricelli. Protohistoric finds from the 2nd millennium BC have been discovered in the contrada Pizzo Senza Fegato.

A rural settlement called Carpinianum developed near the Camaldoli River around the 5th century. It is regarded as the first settlement of the present-day town of Mugnano di Napoli and was associated with a church dedicated to San Giovanni Battista. The Paparelle archaeological area includes a settlement and an extensive necropolis of around 70 graves dating from the pre-Roman period of the 4th to 3rd centuries BC; the finds were discovered in 1998 by the archaeologist Davide Fabris.

Some of the archaeological finds from Paparelle have been incorporated into the basement of the Scuola Media Statale Illuminato-Cirino. This basement was intended to become the Museo Ipogeo. In addition, the cult of San Biagio in Mugnano di Napoli is documented by a record from 1190. The town's history therefore extends from protohistoric traces through pre-Roman and Roman evidence to medieval records.
