Discover Poggiomarino: Longola, Churches and Rural Architecture
Poggiomarino can be discovered as a destination combining a protohistoric landscape, sacred art and rural town architecture. This character is particularly evident at Longola Park, in churches with their own traditions and in a Frasca tradition that has existed for more than a century.
Longola Between History and Landscape
The protohistoric site of Longola is located in the upper Sarno Valley. The settlement consisted of artificial islands surrounded by canals; these enabled movement within the settlement and to the outside. The Parco Archeologico Naturalistico di Longola covers a total area of approximately 25,000 m². It includes toilets, a secretariat, covered areas for reception, exhibitions and events, as well as multimedia and educational spaces. In this way, the park combines archaeological themes with a landscape that can be experienced spatially.
Reconstruction and Nature Observation
Longola Park includes a scale reconstruction of the protohistoric village of Longola. Reconstructed canals run alongside it and can be crossed at water level. Birdwatching is also possible in the green area with spontaneous shrubs and marsh plants. Suitable wooden observation platforms are available between landscaped dunes and tall-growing trees. The birds’ migratory movements are taken into consideration.
Getting to Longola Park
Longola Park can be reached by car via the S.S. 268 del Vesuvio, taking the Poggiomarino-San Giuseppe exit; via the A30, taking the Sarno exit; and via the A3, taking the Scafati exit. The Circumvesuviana also provides a connection: the park can be reached via the line to Sarno via Ottaviano or via the Poggiomarino line via Scafati, getting off at the Poggiomarino stop. It can therefore be reached via three road connections or two rail connections.
Churches, a Palazzo and Sacred Art
Poggiomarino’s historical heritage includes the Chiesa SS. Antonio da Padova, built in 1753. Palazzo Carotenuto is a three-story building from the late 19th century with a symmetrically articulated façade, an entrance portal, a rear courtyard and a large garden. In the Chiesa SS. Rosario, the Baroque altar houses a wooden statue of the Madonna del SS. Rosario dating from the 17th century. According to tradition, in March 1875 the wooden statue of the Virgin of the SS. Rosario sweated particularly heavily on its face for several days. The event attracted believers and curious visitors from the surrounding towns.
Local Architectural Forms and the Frasca Tradition
The characteristic rural houses in Poggiomarino include cubic examples of rural architecture, which were also known as “trulli vesuviani.” The Frasca tradition in Poggiomarino has existed for more than a century and was celebrated again on December 31, 2024, to mark the transition from the old year to the new.
