Somma Vesuviana between Casamale and Monte Somma

Somma Vesuviana lies on the slopes of Monte Somma, north of the Vesuvius volcanic complex. This location alone points to the two sides of the town: a landscape shaped by volcanic forces and a dense network of medieval heritage, religious sites, museums and festival traditions. The circular trail on Monte Somma leads to Punta Nasone. The Villa Augustea at the foot of Monte Somma offers a different perspective. This rare archaeological site has vertically readable layers that make it possible to trace the history of volcanic eruptions in the Vesuvius area. Villa Augustea has been systematically excavated since the 1990s.

Casamale: medieval heritage in the town centre

Casamale is the only medieval village within the perimeter of Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio. The district preserves medieval churches, palaces, portals, arches and other urban features. The medieval Borgo Casamale retains almost all of its thirteen towers within its ring of walls. As a result, the historic architectural forms appear not only as individual buildings but also as a cohesive fortified settlement area.

Near one of the access gates to the borgo, Castello d’Alagno lies directly beside the historic centre of Somma Vesuviana. It was built in 1458 at the behest of Lucrezia d’Alagno and has four cylindrical towers at the corners. Today, Castello d’Alagno is almost entirely in ruins. Also linked to the town’s religious history is the Santa Maria a Castello sanctuary: it was built in 1622 on the site of an older fortress and remains a destination for numerous pilgrims from the surrounding area.

Museums, archives and rural culture

The Museo della Civiltà Contadina is housed in the former cellars and garden of the monumental Santa Maria del Pozzo complex in Somma Vesuviana. The Museo della Civiltà Contadina “Michele Russo” preserves around 3,000 objects, tools and artefacts relating to rural culture from the period before the introduction of agricultural machinery. Also on display are around 3,000 objects and tools relating to transport systems, viticulture and winemaking, activities around the hearth, the sacred protection of the area dedicated to animals and their role in household management. Visits to the Museo della Civiltà Contadina “M. Russo” must be arranged by telephone.

The Collegiate Church has an ecclesiastical archive containing around 5,000 documents dating from 1492 to the 20th century. It also has an organ dating from 1797, made by Benedetto De Rosa. Together with Casamale, Castello d’Alagno and the museums, this forms a cultural focal point that brings architecture, religious history, craftsmanship and rural everyday life into relation with one another.

Festivals, crafts and encounters with the landscape

During the Festa delle Lucerne, the streets of Casamale are lit by thousands of small oil lamps arranged on geometrically shaped wooden structures. During this festival, the Madonna della Neve is carried from the Collegiate Church through the four gates of the walled town on 5 August. Another tradition is the Presepe Vivente in Casamale. It uses the iconography of 18th-century Neapolitan nativity scenes and depicts, among other things, workshops and historic crafts.

The rural plain is also part of Somma Vesuviana’s character. An agricultural business around three kilometres from the town centre offers apitourism and educational workshops about the relationships between bees, the environment and people.
