Vico Equense between Coast, Culture and Monte Faito

Vico Equense can be discovered through its culture, trails and coastal landscape. The Museo Mineralogico Campano, the Church of SS. Annunziata and the Antiquarium Silio Italico each offer a different focus, while Monte Faito represents woodland scenery. Culture between Museum and Historic Building

The collections of the Museo Mineralogico Campano include minerals, fossils, shells and stone tools made by human ancestors. The Museo Mineralogico Campano was founded in 1992 by the Discepolo Foundation. Since 1997, it has had a palaeontological section with dinosaur fossils such as eggs, claws and teeth.

The medieval section of the residential complex known as Castello Giusso was built by Sparano di Bari between 1248 and 1289. Castello Giusso is currently a private residence and hosts exhibitions and cultural events. The Antonio Asturi Open Museum is a permanent exhibition about the painter Antonio Asturi in the new municipal building at Piazzale Giancarlo Siani.

The Church of SS. Annunziata is considered the only example of sacred architecture in the Gothic style on the Sorrento Coast. A large underground gallery presents an exhibition on the history of the building and the Diocese of Vico Equense.

The Antiquarium Silio Italico displays Attic pottery with black and red figures, Bucchero pottery, Etruscan bronzes, Ionian and Corinthian vases and bowls, large amphorae, jewellery and weapons. The exhibition also reconstructs the history of a necropolis in which around 200 tombs have been discovered in various phases since 1965.

Trails, Forests and Underwater Landscape

Monte Faito can be reached from Vico Equense via the R. Bosco road. At Monte Faito, you can walk through forests of holm oaks and chestnut trees. In this way, the mountain landscape complements the museums and historic buildings with a clear focus on nature.

Via Castello Marina is an old, scenic footpath to the Marina di Vico Equense. Vico Equense also has a sandy beach with natural springs. The landscape therefore includes both the path to the marina and the beach by the water.

The Banco di Santa Croce represents the maritime side. A biological protection zone was established there on 15 June 1993. The underwater shoal lies approximately 600 metres off the coast of Vico Equense and at a depth of around 10 metres. The Banco di Santa Croce is a species-rich underwater site and is known among divers internationally.
