Balze between protected area and mountain landscape

Balze lies in a landscape where nature and activity are closely connected. In the Natura 2000 site IT4080008, forests cover just under 60 % of the area. The protected area also includes 19 habitats of Community interest, including seven priority habitats. Together, they cover around one third of the area.

The natural area includes the Rupi delle Balze. From Balze, the exceptional panoramic view stretches from the Romagna Riviera and Monte Amiata across the Monti Sibillini and Gran Sasso to the Alps. This gives the destination a landscape setting that can play a role both when choosing individual excursions and when planning a peaceful stay.

Historic trails and routes on Monte Fumaiolo

A special destination for hikers is the path between Balze and Capanne, laid out in the 19th century. It still features its original, solid stone paving. The route therefore combines movement through the mountain landscape with a visible detail of its historic trail structure.

The Monte Fumaiolo area offers numerous hiking trails through beech and coniferous forests all year round. In winter, a 5 km-long, moderately difficult cross-country skiing loop adds to the range of activities. It extends as far as the sources of the Tiber. Snowshoe hikes are also possible at night in the same area.

The Verghereto–Balze stage is 10.6 km long and rated T. It leads to the historic sources of the Tiber and past the Cascate del Tevere. The route also passes the Falesia di Balze, which is considered a meeting place for many climbers. This makes it possible to take in different landscape impressions in a single stage without confusing the individual features of the route.

Winter sports with different focuses

The ski area has a ski lift serving three red pistes for alpine skiing: one 1 km-long piste and two 800 m-long pistes with artificial snowmaking. Fumipark is a snowboard park with jumps, boxes and rails. Together with the cross-country skiing loop and snowshoe hikes, this creates a selection of different winter sports for the cold season.

Local traditions and regional cuisine

South of Balze lies the Eremo di Sant'Alberico at an altitude of 1,147 m. The Festa di Sant'Alberico is celebrated on 29 August. A culinary specialty of the Tuscan-Romagnol mountain region is Tortello di patate alla lastra, a traditional street food. Alongside hiking and winter sports, these themes give your stay a cultural and regional dimension.
