Wine Tradition and Historic Hospitality

Bertinoro combines a wine tradition with a history of hospitality that is visibly reflected in several places. The Colonna dell’Ospitalità, also known as the Colonna degli Anelli, is a symbol of this historic hospitality. Its twelve rings are connected with an old custom: travellers tied their horses there and became guests of one of twelve noble families. The Rito dell’Ospitalità is renewed every year on the first Sunday in September as a public celebration.

Rocca, Museum and Late Baroque Art

The Museo Interreligioso in Bertinoro’s Rocca Vescovile is housed in the medieval dungeons and a 16th-century cistern. The museum is dedicated to Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Three sections containing a total of 15 rooms display significant works of art. The Chiesa di San Silvestro provides another historical highlight: it was rebuilt between 1740 and 1749 in the late Baroque style. The church houses a painting by Giuseppe Marchetti depicting Saint Pope Sylvester I and Saint Benedict adoring the Sacred Heart.

Viticulture as a Feature of the Townscape

La Strada della Vendemmia is an approximately 100-metre-long narrow exhibition route between Via della Trinità and Via Vendemini. Since 2001, seven paintings by local artists have been permanently displayed there. The works depict important moments in vineyard life and wine production. The Campana dell'Albana can be viewed at the Balcone della Romagna and rung by anyone. Once a year, its chimes announce the beginning of the grape harvest. At the same time, the bell commemorates the wine tradition of Bertinoro and Romagna, as well as Albana as Italy’s first white wine to receive D.O.C.G. recognition that year.

Panoramic Views and Paths Through the Surroundings

Piazza della Libertà is a panoramic terrace overlooking the sea and the Romagna plain. The start of the Sentiero Monte dei Preti is considered a viewpoint on the hill of Bertinoro. The Bertinoro Tour begins and ends at Bertinoro Castle and passes through the surrounding countryside with vineyards, olive groves, orchards and ridges overlooking the sea.

Between Hills, Coast and Hinterland

The Bertinoro Strade Bianche route connects the hills with the coast. It passes through distinctive places such as Cervia’s salt pans and salt warehouses, as well as small villages in the hinterland. Its course along riverbanks, over quiet gravel roads in the countryside and along paved roads showcases different landscapes and types of route.

Festivals Throughout the Year

Religious traditions also shape the surroundings of Bertinoro. The Feast of the Madonna del Lago is celebrated every year on the Sunday after Ascension Day with a solemn procession to Bertinoro Cathedral.
