Camposonaldo: Hiking, Cycling Routes and Church History
Historical references in the village and surrounding area add to the character of the landscape.
Hiking with clear route references
One hike leads uphill from Santa Sofia along the ancient road to Camposonaldo and onwards to Ca’ del Papa, which is situated in a spot with sweeping views. Shortly before joining the provincial road to Passo Calla, the route branches off to the right. This provides a clear sequence of waypoints for orientation: Santa Sofia at the beginning, Camposonaldo along the route and Ca’ del Papa as a further destination. For day planning, the ascent begins at Santa Sofia; the later turn-off before the provincial road to Passo Calla follows as another point of reference. The uphill start and the later change of direction divide the described route into two clearly distinguishable planning sections.
The mountain La Crocetta is also located near Camposonaldo. This reference broadens the spatial perspective beyond the village centre and helps you distinguish between a specific hiking connection and an individual mountain in the nearby area when planning your trip.
Church and history of Camposonaldo
The parish church of Camposonaldo is dedicated to San Giovanni Battista. Camposonaldo is regarded as an old Pieve; its church had a baptistery. The church was so badly damaged by the earthquakes of 1918–1919 that it had to be demolished. During reconstruction, the former bell gable was replaced by a square bell tower. The square bell tower differs formally from the former bell gable and is part of the building history of the reconstruction after the earthquakes.
The Abbazia di Sant'Ellero monastery in Galeata is located near Camposonaldo. The Festa della Madonna del Carmine celebrated in Camposonaldo on 28 July 2019 provides a clearly dated insight into local festival culture: a Mass was followed by a procession to Calci. For visitors interested in culture, the church, the monastery and the celebration on 28 July 2019 therefore provide distinct points of reference. Galeata and Calci extend the geographical context of the cultural history beyond Camposonaldo.
Cycling tours through the hilly landscape
Agribike Romagna has designed four new cycle tourism routes that take visitors to the gentle hills of Pondo, Spinello and Camposonaldo. One cycling tour starts in Santa Sofia and leads to the historically significant villages of Camposonaldo and Spescia. This brings the connection to Spescia into focus alongside the village itself. For your planning, this route offers a different thematic approach if you would like to consider local history not only through a single church building, but in relation to several villages. When choosing a route, the four tours to the gentle hills of Pondo, Spinello and Camposonaldo can be distinguished from the tour through the historically significant villages of Camposonaldo and Spescia.
