Fortress, history and townscape

Castrocaro Terme combines historic architecture with its thermal heritage and a landscape that can be explored along a variety of routes. The historic centre is still enclosed by three rings of walls. At its heart is the Fortezza di Castrocaro, which consists of three distinct architectural and defensive structures: the Girone, the Rocca and the Medici Arsenals. The first approach to the town therefore leads directly into a richly layered historic setting.

Inside the medieval Fortezza di Castrocaro is the Museo storico del Castello e della Città. It is housed in the 13th-century Palazzo del Castellano. The fortress courtyard opens onto a panoramic terrace overlooking the Valle dell’Acquacheta and Monte Falterona. Terme di Castrocaro uses “Magiche Acque” as the name of its thermal spa. The Parco delle Terme was also laid out at the beginning of the 20th century to complement the thermal treatments and provide opportunities for relaxing walks and moments of rest. For a more leisurely-paced trip, both the thermal heritage and a specially designed park are therefore part of the townscape.

The waterways in the surrounding area also shape the character of Castrocaro Terme. The Parco Fluviale di Castrocaro Terme is an equipped green area that stretches along the Montone River. In the hills around Castrocaro Terme, the Laghetti della Bolga collect salty iodine-rich waters, which are conveyed through underground pipes to the thermal facilities. In the Parco della Sorgara, iron-rich waters from the Rio Petra flow; they have long been valued for their significant therapeutic properties. Another distinctive landscape feature is the calanchi, formed by intense erosion and possessing considerable naturalistic value.

Routes between river, hills and vineyards

The Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori runs through the Val Montone and across the hills of Castrocaro Terme and Terra del Sole. Several routes with different character are available for active days. A peaceful cycling route follows the Montone River and can be ridden almost entirely on a cycle path. One circular route crosses a ridge and then descends along the path beside the Rio Cozzi through a landscape shaped by Spungone, with rocky peaks and ravines. Another circular route starts in the medieval village of Castrocaro, at the Fortezza di Castrocaro.
