Modigliana between Art and Landscape

Modigliana lies in the Tramazzo Valley and combines a clear cultural and historical focus with trails, wine traditions and unusual landscapes. Between museums, historic buildings and routes through the surrounding area, you can discover different sides of the town without reducing its local characteristics to a single theme.

Art and History in the Town

The Palazzo Pretorio represents Modigliana’s medieval history: the building dates from the 14th century, initially belonged to the Counts Guidi and from 1377 was the seat of the Podestà, or praetor. At the Pinacoteca Silvestro Lega, the chronological story ranges from the donation to the collection: Michele Campana donated the first group of paintings to the municipality in 1959; in 1999, the Pinacoteca opened as a permanent collection.

The Pinacoteca contains a significant collection of 19th- and 20th-century Italian art. Works by Silvestro Lega, who was born in Modigliana in 1826, are on display. The Museo Civico Don Giovanni Verità is located in Don Giovanni Verità’s house, where he gave Giuseppe Garibaldi shelter in August 1849. The museum preserves the original structure of a 19th-century middle-class home.

The Feste dell’800 include living pictures based on works by Silvestro Lega, known in Italian as tableaux vivants, with numerous participants in a detailed reconstruction.

Circular Trails, Cycling Routes and Nature

The Sentieri Agrourbani trail network is ideal for outdoor activities. It consists of nine circular trails that start in the town centre, with various sub-routes and more than 180 km of trails in total. Each route has its own theme and narrative. The themes and narratives are connected with historical, natural and gastronomic attractions. The routes have been recorded by GPS and can be downloaded from the project website.

The Costa Ceparano route crosses little-known ridges, badlands and broom-covered landscapes and offers views of the sea and the horizon; it is suitable for cycling. The Falesia di Ceparano was once a large sea cliff. Fossils of prehistoric marine animals can still be found there today. The Montebello experimental protected area offers an easy walk through a forest botanical garden that is suitable for families.

The Cerchio Dantesco is a ring-shaped route in the form of a figure eight and follows a section of the route Dante travelled between Florence and Ravenna. At Passo del Monte Trebbio, the Monumento al ciclista stands in a small roadside garden. The garden also contains two plaques from cycling clubs, installed by the initiators.

Sangiovese and Local Events

Modigliana’s culinary calendar features the Sagra Sangiovese in Festa, held every year on the fourth Sunday in April. On this occasion, wine tastings with traditional dishes are offered; there are also events about the history of this grape variety. At Non solo Kiwi, you can find pastries with kiwi from local bakeries, as well as kiwi-based cocktails and long drinks made with products derived from it. At Zoc ed Nadel, participants can gather around the fire and prepare meat and vegetables on the provided grills.

The Rocca dei Conti Guidi offers an impressive view over the valley and is considered the town’s main attraction.
