Montetiffi: Abbey History, Nature and Teglia Tradition

Art and Benedictine Tradition

The Museo Agostino Venanzio Reali – Arte e Poesia is located in the former canonry of Montetiffi, which is connected with San Leonardo Abbey. It permanently displays sketches, paintings, terracotta works, poems, Bible studies and translations by Agostino Venanzio Reali. Its range of visual works, poetic studies and religious studies gives the site a clear cultural focus.

The Benedictine Abbey of San Leonardo was built in the mid-11th century by the inhabitants of Montetiffi from hewn stone and handed over to the Benedictine monks. The abbey contains significant 14th-century frescoes, including works in a niche and in the presbytery sacristy. At San Leonardo, architectural history and mural painting therefore come together directly.

Buildings and Places of Interest in the Surrounding Area

Another structure in Montetiffi is the Ponte Romanico. It was probably built around the year 1000 and completely restored in 2005. If you would also like to include destinations in the surrounding area, you will find the Palazzo del Poggiano palace and the Fondazione Tito Balestra Onlus museum there. Both are located near Montetiffi and complement the town’s cultural perspective.

Nature and Walking Experience

Montetiffi lies within the approximately 1,400-hectare protected natural area of SIC Montetiffi, Alto Uso. Its natural features are shaped by a small river: erosion of the sandstone has created small waterfalls, ponds, potholes and the famous Marmitte dei Giganti. When choosing excursions, the contrast between the protected landscape and the distinctive water formations provides clear guidance.

For a longer walking experience, there is the Sentiero delle Teglie di Montetiffi trail. The trail is 9.4 km long and has an elevation gain of 513 metres. The estimated walking time is approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes. Along the Sentiero, information boards explain the Teglia di Montetiffi, the traditional preparation of piadina and the natural features of the local SIC in the Alta Valle dell'Uso. This allows the route to be experienced in connection with the landscape and everyday culture.

Teglie and Piadina

Montetiffi is traditionally known as the village of the tegliai. There, the centuries-old craft of producing teglie exclusively by hand for baking piadina continues to this day. The Le Teglie di Montetiffi workshop produces various formats: larger teglie for fireplaces or ovens and smaller ones for gas stoves. Anyone wishing to understand local food culture through its production will find a particularly tangible point of connection here.
