Premilcuore Between Nature and History

Premilcuore contributes a considerable and valuable part of its territory to the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna. This means you can discover the town from two perspectives: via the park’s trails and landscapes or through the walled town and its architectural history.

Trails for Different Travel Plans

The trails in the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi can be explored on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. One specific option is the 5 km Passeggiata al Gorgolaio from the town. Along this route, you can see the Cascata della Sega near the Agriturismo Ridolla and the Grotta Urlante. If you plan to take Sentiero 323 between Premilcuore and Strada Valbura/Bucine, a landslide in the hamlet of Piansegni makes passage more difficult. Before setting out, you should therefore check the current conditions and the actual accessibility of the trails in the national park.

Water Landscape at the Grotta Urlante

At the Grotta Urlante in the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, the Rabbi River forms a waterfall with a powerful, impressive sound. Two pools form beneath a 17th-century stone bridge. Together with the Cascata della Sega, this site is one of the landscape impressions that can be experienced on the Passeggiata al Gorgolaio.

Medieval Town Centre and Notable Architectural History

The walled village of Premilcuore preserves an almost intact medieval town centre. The Porta Fiorentina is also known as the Torre dell’Orologio. It was built as a tower-like gateway to the castle of Premilcuore, constructed in the Tuscan style of the 13th or 14th century, and is now approximately 21 metres high including the battlements. The Pieve di San Martino in Alpe also dates back a long way: its existence has been documented since at least the 10th or 11th century, while the current structure dates from the second half of the 16th century.

Understanding Nature and Regional Traces

The visitor centre in Premilcuore includes an educational laboratory with games and activities for children. The fauna room presents the animals living in the protected area using information panels and monitors. Alongside the trails and water sites, this provides a place where visitors can gain an informative understanding of the protected area’s wildlife.

In Fiumicello, the ancient millstones of the Mulino Mengozzi, which are still fully operational, have been preserved.
