Quarto on Lago di Quarto: Nature, Trails and Culture

Circular Trail, Water and Birdwatching

The Anello del Lago is a circular trail around Lago di Quarto intended exclusively for pedestrians. Along the route, there are ten stations covering the main sights. The circular trail therefore offers a clearly structured way to explore the lake and its surroundings on foot without losing sight of the individual stations.

The waters of Lago di Quarto also offer various possibilities. The two arms of the lake can be explored by canoe and small boat on an approximately 8 km round trip; one launch point is located in Quarto. Birdwatching is also possible at the lake along the circular trail and from observation points on the Quarto–Massa road. Sport fishing is permitted with a licence for type B waters.

The Cammino di San Vicinio in Quarto

Quarto is the endpoint of the Sarsina–Quarto stage of the Cammino di San Vicinio. The same pilgrimage route also includes a 15.6 km stage from Quarto to Acquapartita. The different route lengths help you tailor your planning to your preferred daily distance. The Quarto–Acquapartita stage leads downhill from Quarto town centre to a dam built in 1922 with a hydroelectric power station, across a bridge into the park and then along a narrow path beside the lake. It then crosses the Para stream over large boulders.

Black Pine Forest and Montalto

The black pine forest overlooks Quarto and Lago di Quarto. It stretches from the town to the summit of Montalto at an elevation of 840 m. When choosing between lake, forest and trail-related themes, this landscape forms a distinct focus: the town is connected to its surroundings not only through Lago di Quarto, but also through the rising forest and its connection to the summit.

The Santuario della Madonna Pellegrina

The Santuario della Madonna Pellegrina stands on the shore of Lago di Quarto and was built in the second half of the 20th century. The sanctuary houses a venerated image of the Virgin Mary, which arrived in Quarto on 2 June 1950 after the famous and lengthy “Peregrinatio Mariae” through various parishes of the Alta Valle del Savio. The sanctuary’s character is also defined by ten leaded-glass windows by Goffredo Gaeta. In this way, the sanctuary complements Quarto’s nature and trail experiences with a tangible connection to religious history and design.
