Roncofreddo: Castle History, Landscape and Summer Music

Roncofreddo combines badlands, hills, valleys and gorges with a local history in which castles, churches, art and wartime history can be seen. Added to this are trail materials for two routes, summer concerts in Monteleone and a traditional festival centered around the pea.

Trails through Landscape and History

For the hiking and cycling route Sentieri degli Otto Castelli, the municipality of Roncofreddo provides downloadable trail materials. You can use these documents to prepare your own hike or cycling tour along the route. The connection to the eight castles also gives the trail a historical perspective. On the numerous trails through the badlands and hills of Roncofreddo, walkers can observe pheasants and hares. Gorgoscuro is one of the places in the valleys and gorges of Roncofreddo, which are crossed by streams and small rivers. The landscape alternates between badlands and valleys and gorges shaped by water. Here, you can combine trails, hilly scenery and water-carved ravines with the opportunity to observe nature.

Sacred Art and Malatesta Traces

The Parrocchiale di S. Biagio dates from the 18th century, but was extensively remodeled. The church houses a wooden crucifix and two paintings by the artist Antonio Cimatori, il Visacci (1560–1623). The works depict the Annunciation and Saint Francesca Romana.

In connection with the events involving the Malatesta family, the castle of Roncofreddo is often regarded as a strategic refuge. This role is associated with its geographical location and solid fortifications.

The historic center of Roncofreddo also includes the Oratorio della Madonna della Misericordia. The Rubicone ’44 Museo del Fronte is housed there in an old cellar that was used by the Allies as a radio station. The museum is divided into nine thematic sections; each is supplemented by an introductory text panel and extensive visual material that contextualizes the objects on display.

Music and Local Festival Traditions

Monteleone is a small hamlet in the municipality of Roncofreddo. Concerts of classical and traditional music take place there in summer. Anyone planning cultural events in summer can include the concerts in Monteleone as a separate item alongside the historic sites.

The Sagra del Pisello di Roncofreddo also reflects a local festival tradition: it has reached its 55th edition and has been celebrated there as a festival since the 1960s.
