Bore among paths and rural landscapes
Bore lies along the “Avenue to Genoa”, an important road between the Po Valley and Liguria that follows the Via Francigena. At the same time, the town is set in a landscape of forests, meadows and ridges oriented towards the area of the Province of Piacenza.
Forests, paths and Monte Carameto
The forests and chestnut groves around Bore offer paths and routes for walking, trekking, mountain biking and e-biking. Monte Carameto is one of the most representative destinations in the Bore area and can also be reached from Passo del Pelizzone. Bosco Paradiso is an equipped recreational area in a centuries-old chestnut grove, suitable for picnics and relaxing stays.
Hamlets, farmsteads and religious buildings
Bore preserves a system of fortified rural hamlets, with traces still visible in Pozzolo, Rovina, Zani and Castiglione dei Turchi. Rovina preserves a pre-Renaissance settlement layout with large farmyards and stone houses along the main road. In the hamlet of Zani, access was secured on two sides by gates; the inner main road is paved with river pebbles and stone slabs and provides access to farmyards, arcades and loggias.
Villa Marazzi is a medieval tower house in Bore. Casa Bergonzi (Marazzi) is a fortified rural farmstead with a stone tower, porticoes, a well and ovens. Casa Cordani in Ferrari is one of the few surviving examples in the municipality of Bore of a rural house with a balchio accessed by a stone staircase. Vila Franchi, by contrast, is largely in ruins and overgrown with vegetation; its origins may date back to the 9th century.
The Mulino di Metti retains old wooden cogwheels; a water-powered mill mechanism used water wheels to drive the millstone.
The religious buildings include the Oratorio di Fiori, built at the beginning of the 18th century and blessed in 1711, as well as the Oratorio di San Rocco di Montpellier, a religious building constructed in the 16th century in the hamlet of Villa Pereto in Bore. The MaestĂ loc. Fiori is a small, white-plastered wayside shrine with a covering of stone slabs near LocalitĂ Fiori on the provincial road between Bore and Pellegrino Parmense.
Chestnuts as part of the local cuisine
In Bore, chestnuts are used for cakes, traditional preparations and, in particular, sweet chestnut tortelli.
Getting there and planning your trip
The main driving route to Bore is via the A15 Parma–La Spezia motorway, the Fornovo di Taro exit, and then via Varano de’ Melegari and Varsi along the road through the Val Ceno. For travel by train, Fornovo di Taro and Fidenza are the most convenient railway stations for Bore; local connections to the area are available from there.
