Church Art and Religious History
The present-day Chiesa di Santa Caterina was built between 1914 and 1917 to a design by the architect Alfredo Provinciali. The original Oratorio di Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, on the other hand, was built in the early years of the 16th century at the instigation of the Lupi, the lords of Soragna.
On 24 April 1966, the Chiesa di Santa Caterina was elevated to the Santuario di Gesù Adolescente. The occasion was a painting created by Giuseppe Moroni in 1916, depicting Jesus as a young man surrounded by young people from the five continents. Diolo’s parish church is also associated with a painting entitled “Deposizione di Cristo dalla croce”. For travellers interested in culture, this creates a focal point that brings together architecture and religious art.
Bell Tower and Guareschi Connection
The former church of Diolo was demolished; its Baroque bell tower was preserved. The Centro del Boscaccio is located in the old bell tower of the Church of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria. Its name refers to the “Bosco” farmstead, where Guareschi’s paternal grandparents lived.
Cycling through the Bassa Parmense
The PR 11 “Guareschi e la Bassa Parmense” is a 71-kilometre circular route connecting Parma, Diolo and Fontanelle through the world of people, landscapes, passions and cycling culture shaped by Guareschi. This means you can understand the route both as a cycling theme and as a cultural connection between several places.
On the PR 11 route, Diolo is reached at kilometre 32 via the road that passes through Carzeto.
Local Connections and Nearby Destinations
The suburban TEP route 2125 connects Roccabianca, Diolo, Soragna and Fidenza.
In the wider area around Soragna, you will find the Museo del Parmigiano Reggiano. The Labirinto della Masone museum is also located in the vicinity of Diolo. Both destinations broaden the perspective beyond the churches and the route, while their different geographical connections—one with Soragna and the other with Diolo—can be considered separately when planning your trip.
