Wildlife and landscapes at Monte Fuso

The Centro Faunistico Monte Fuso is home to more than 100 hoofed animals, including deer, fallow deer and mouflon. The grounds cover 45 hectares. Mixed deciduous forests account for 75 percent of the area, while permanently species-rich grassland makes up the remaining 25 percent. The Centro Faunistico Monte Fuso also has four high-rope courses for adults and two high-rope courses for children aged 4 and over.

Water, forests and historic sites

Lago di Scurano features abundant aquatic plants and provides a habitat for several bird species. The “Anello Val d'Enza” follows a service road around the lake and can begin in Scurano or at the Centro Faunistico del Monte Fuso. In its specified sequence, the “Anello Val d'Enza” mountain-bike itinerary passes through Formiano.

The cultural sites are also closely connected to the landscape along the trails. Bastia Fattori is regarded as a fortified medieval farmstead dating from the 14th century. The Chiesa dei SS. Ippolito e Cassiano is regarded as an 11th-century Romanesque parish church. Along the valleys of Monte Fuso in the Parma Apennines, the Sentiero resistente connects and explains 11 sites associated with the war of liberation against the National Socialists and Fascists. As a 20-kilometre circular route, it connects the Museo della Resistenza, the Centro faunistico del monte Fuso and Rusino.

Shorter routes include “Formiano - Torre-Croce - Scurano” at 4.98 kilometres and “Anello Formiano-Monte Fuso-Pineta-Formiano” at 7.21 kilometres. The hiking route “Formiano - Costola” is classified as easy.

Another short nature stop is Cascata della Grondara, which can be reached via a short footpath.
