Langhirano: Fortress, Prosciutto and Apennine Views
Accommodation in Langhirano
Langhirano between Fortress and Parma Tradition
Langhirano combines distinctive fortress architecture with the culinary tradition of the Parma area and a hilly landscape. Castello di Torrechiara is a fortress complex located on a hill in the Comune di Langhirano and overlooks the Parma stream valley. For your stay, you can therefore distinguish between three different focal points: architectural history, views and Prosciutto di Parma.

Prosciutto, Regional Products and Wine
At the Museo del Prosciutto di Parma, the tour takes you through the Parma area, various pig breeds, salt, the production of Prosciutto di Parma and its use in the kitchen. Via the Audiogiro platform, the museum offers free audio guides with explanations, details, anecdotes and curiosities. Ristorante al Museo complements this culinary focus with coffee, tastings or meals featuring typical products from Parma, as well as a selection of wines from the Colli di Parma.
During the first two weekends of September, the Festival del Prosciutto takes place in Langhirano. Along the main streets, regional products and stalls run by sausage and ham producers, wineries and cheese dairies are part of the festival. This gives the local specialty its own seasonal setting, while the Museo del Prosciutto explores its production and use in the kitchen in greater detail.
Churches, Museums and Local History
The Museo del Risorgimento Faustino Tanara preserves memorabilia, letters, photographs and documents relating to Faustino Tanara, the local Garibaldian Risorgimento movement, the Fratellanza Artigiana Langhiranese and the Società Femminile di Mutuo Soccorso con Cassa di Maternità in Langhirano. Fragments of late fifteenth-century frescoes have been preserved in the Badia di Torrechiara; a Madonna and Child is attributed to the painter Francesco Tacconi.
The original core of what is now the Palazzo Municipale in Langhirano was built during the tenure of Bishop Grazia (1224–1236) for the bishop's captain. Some authors date the construction of the Pieve di Arola to the sixth century and describe it as one of the oldest parish churches in the diocese. The remains of the ancient Pieve di Arola were recently restored for conservation purposes.
Hilltop Views, Art and a Stage
The belvedere of the Badia di Torrechiara overlooks the Parma stream, the Canale Maggiore and the surrounding hills. The churchyard of the Pieve di Cozzano lies at an altitude of 700 metres on the eastern slopes of Monte Pozzo and offers views of significant Apennine peaks. The Sentiero d'Arte comprises contemporary art installations created especially for the route and to coexist with the surrounding nature.
Stage 01v begins in Langhirano and ends at Passo di Fragno. When choosing a hotel or other accommodation in Langhirano, you can plan your stay around culinary themes, churches and local history, or views, art and this stage. Bus route 12 connects Parma railway station with Langhirano and runs in both directions.
