Architectural History Overlooking the Enza

In Montechiarugolo, architectural history and the river landscape can be experienced in several places. A tour of Castello di Montechiarugolo also includes the 15th-century loggia above the Enza. River Floodplains and Biodiversity

The Il Castello ecological compensation area lies on the left bank of the Enza and is one of the best-preserved river floodplain areas in the municipality in terms of morphology and natural features. It was established in 2018 and forms part of the broader “Progetto di Tutela e Valorizzazione della Fascia Fluviale della Media Val d’Enza”. This clearly defined natural area complements Montechiarugolo’s historic buildings.

The Il Castello ecological compensation area is home to species found in wet river and floodplain areas, marshland habitats, dry grasslands and open stands of trees and shrubs. These include, among others, the green woodpecker, wren, European robin, agile frog and roe deer. The combination of wet river and marshland areas, dry grasslands and open woodland characterizes the Il Castello natural area just as much as the species found there.
