Terenzo: Churches, Pilgrimage Routes and Monte Prinzera

Terenzo lies at the foot of Monte Croce. In the Middle Ages, the village was an important transport hub and a strategic point on the Via Romea. Pilgrims and travellers from Liguria and Tuscany passed through Terenzo on their journeys along the Via del Sale. Churches from Different Periods

The present-day Chiesa di Santo Stefano was almost completely rebuilt in 1789 in simple neoclassical forms; only the bell tower of the previous building was preserved.

The dedication of the Pieve di Santa Maria o di Bardone to Sancta Maria has been documented since 1004. Recent excavations at the Pieve di Santa Maria o di Bardone uncovered graves dated to the 6th century AD. This site therefore brings together a very early dedication documented in writing and an archaeological finding from Late Antiquity in close proximity.

San Michele in Corniana

The Chiesa di San Michele in Corniana stands on a rocky spur of volcanic origin at the foot of the ruins of an ancient castle. This setting describes not only the building itself, but also places it in a clearly recognisable context of volcanic bedrock and castle ruins.

Hiking Trail and Nature Observation

The hiking trail “La Via degli Scalpellini”, approved by the C.A.I. trail commission, is numbered 771 and runs near the rock outcrops of the Salti del Diavolo. Its name and trail number provide clear orientation, while the rock outcrops form a clearly described reference point along its route.

The Via degli Scalpellini crosses the Torrente Baganza year-round via a new suspension footbridge.

The Monte Prinzera Oasis lies within the municipalities of Terenzo and Fornovo Taro. There, the area features a nature trail with several observation points where visitors can discover the area’s key environmental characteristics. Alongside its historic churches and hiking trail, Terenzo therefore also offers a nature-focused place where observing the surroundings takes centre stage.
