Varsi lies in the Ceno Valley at the foot of Monte Dosso and combines traces of history with a landscape that can be explored on foot, on horseback and through cultural discoveries. In the High Middle Ages, the Via Francigena passed through the town; pilgrims used it on their way to Rome. This makes Varsi one of the Italian destinations where landscape and history stand closely side by side.

Castles, Churches and Historic Traces
One defining landmark is Castello di Varsi, first mentioned in 1206. Today, three cylindrical towers remain, two of which overlook the town’s main square. Varsi’s history also includes the parish church of San Pietro, which dates back to the 14th century. Anyone interested in medieval architecture and the development of small Italian towns will find several tangible points of interest here for a cultural stay.
Città d’Umbria also broadens the historical perspective. The archaeological site can be reached from the Tosca area. On the plateau, only the remains of a tower with part of a wall were found, alongside remnants of walls. The remains are dated to the 10th to 13th century and interpreted as a fortification. Castello di Golaso is a stone building surrounded by walls with round corner towers. Mulino Lamberti represents a different historical era: the old mill has a horizontal waterwheel on the right bank of the Torrente Ceno; its materials and forms have been preserved in the building to this day.
Trails Through the Valley and Landscape
Varsi is also shaped by its trails. The Ippovia della Val Taro e Val Ceno passes through the town, and there are also numerous routes for trekking and horseback riding. This combination appeals to travelers who do not want to devote their stay exclusively to sightseeing, but instead wish to combine experiences in nature with physical activity. The historic trails and today’s landscape offer different ways of experiencing the same region.
Lago di Varsi is a small lake surrounded by nature. It is also associated with a local legend about an old submerged monastery. The waterfalls of the Rio Golotta add another distinctive element to the landscape, set amid greenery. The natural scenery therefore ranges from the open surroundings of the lake to the seemingly wooded watercourses, without the town’s cultural themes fading into the background.
Festivals and Regional Orientation
The local experience includes the Sagra di San Pietro, an event in Varsi dedicated to the patron saint, with music, food and activities for all age groups. It complements the historic buildings and trails with a communal and culinary occasion. For arrival by car, the A15 Parma–La Spezia motorway, with the Fornovo di Taro exit, is the most important point of reference. Those arriving by train should use Fornovo di Taro and Solignano as reference points; both are considered the most convenient railway stations and lie on the Parma–La Spezia line.
