Zibello between Sacred Buildings and Culinary Tradition

Church, Oratory and Piazza Guareschi
A prominent sacred building is the parish church of Chiesa dei Santi Gervasio e Protasio. The Gothic church, with Renaissance elements, was built between 1550 and 1580. The patronal feast of Saints Gervasius and Protasius takes place on 19 June.
The Oratorio di San Luigi is located near the banks of the Po, beyond the main embankment in the river floodplain. It was consecrated on 21 June 1926. Giovannino Guareschi is also associated with this place: he used the oratory for reflection and to enjoy the tranquillity of the surroundings. Access to Piazza Guareschi is free.
Traces of Ruling History
Anyone interested in Zibello’s political and architectural past will find a clear historical focus here. Between the 12th and 16th centuries, Zibello was a heavily fortified fortress. After the death of Marquis Rolando, the town was granted hereditarily to Giovan Francesco, who made Zibello the capital of his small domain.
The Teatro Pallavicino is also one of the tangible testimonies to this history. It was completely renovated in 1827. As part of this work, the boxes were installed, while Pietro Piazza and Giovanni Azzi were commissioned to decorate the auditorium. Together with the parish church and the Oratorio, this creates a varied picture of religious, courtly and civic culture.
Culatello di Zibello and the Festa del Culatello
The town’s culinary identity is directly linked to Culatello di Zibello DOP: Zibello is part of the protected production area for this specialty. The first official mention of Culatello dates back to 1735. The Festa del Culatello returns to Zibello every year in late spring. The festival includes a live demonstration of the manual processing of Culatello di Zibello – salting, investiture and tying. Such a demonstration was announced for Sunday, 1 June 2025, at 10 a.m. The festival’s food stalls also offer a menu centred around Culatello di Zibello DOP.
