Alseno between Route History and Monastic Tradition
Alseno is a destination for travellers who want to place historic routes, religious architecture and regional cuisine at the heart of their trip to Italy. The Via Emilia, which runs through Alseno, became part of the Via Francigena in the Middle Ages. The Chiesa di San Martino also tells of a long history: it already existed before the castle was built, while the present building dates from 1443.

Abbazia di Chiaravalle della Colomba
A key cultural attraction is the Abbazia di Chiaravalle della Colomba. Its Romanesque-Gothic architecture and the cloister, fully preserved on all sides, define the visit. In the monks’ former dormitory, the Museo dell'Abbazia di Chiaravalle offers an informative tour of the abbey’s history. The museum also explains the monastery’s agriculture-based production system and the function of the grange farms. These were agricultural holdings or production units on the monastery’s properties.
Planning Your Visit and Getting There
For visitors, the abbey is open in the morning from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and in the afternoon from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tours for groups and schools must be reserved. A large car and coach park is located next to the Abbazia di Chiaravalle della Colomba. From the Chiaravalle service area on the A1, the abbey can be reached via a footpath of approximately 600 metres. This combination of opening hours, parking and location makes it possible to plan your visit specifically.
Corpus Christi in Chiaravalle
Every spring on Corpus Christi, the Infiorata is held in Chiaravalle. The monks create a flower carpet with religious motifs along the entire central nave of the church. During this festival, the church interior takes on a special, immediately visible design that combines religious tradition with artistic craftsmanship.
Castles, Villas and Gardens
The historic architecture also includes Castello Landi, Castelnuovo Fogliani and Villa Sforza Fogliani. In the 18th century, the Landi family transformed Castello Landi into an elegant residence. The tower of Castelnuovo Fogliani dates from 1189. In the second half of the 17th century, Villa Sforza Fogliani was transformed from a castle into an elegant aristocratic residence and opens onto an Italian garden. These buildings show how fortified complexes and representative residences developed differently over the centuries.
Wine and Food Culture
The Alseno area is part of the routes of the Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori dei Colli Piacentini. In the Bassa, the moisture is used to produce Culaccia, a Piacenza variation of Culatello. The region’s culinary culture thus complements the historical and religious themes that characterise Alseno and its surroundings.
