Perino between Three Watercourses

Perino lies at the confluence of the Perino stream and the Trebbia River. At the same time, the town is bordered on three sides by watercourses: the Trebbia, the Perino stream and the Rio Armelio. Water is therefore not merely a peripheral detail, but a concrete part of the town’s character. For your travel planning, Perino offers a clear connection to the landscape, between rivers, rock formations and paths in the surrounding area.

Rocks, Paths and Views

From Perino, the Pietra Parcellara appears as a pointed, sharply edged and dark cone. Perino is also considered a starting point and reference point for excursions to Pietra Perduca. From Perino, you can reach the oratory at Pietra Parcellara in about 25 to 30 minutes. On the route to Monte Armelio, you follow the course of the Trebbia; its bends can be traced as far as the Po Valley. A convenient path to the summit of Monte Armelio runs along the southern slope through rocks and pine forests.

Forests, Meadows and River Nature

The Sella dei Generali route also connects different landscapes: sections lead through green meadows, dark ophiolitic rock masses and dense forests, and past the ruins of watchtowers. In the bed of the Perino stream in the Val Trebbia lies the Falesia di Perino, a sandstone climbing wall. Near Perino, protected river habitats are home to the orchid species Orchis tridentata and Ophrys fuciflora.

Churches and Historical Traces

Two churches stand on Perino’s main square. The newer one replaced the older church for religious celebrations after the latter had been threatened by a landslide. The Church of San Luigi Gonzaga was built in 1895; its façade is made of white and black stone and features terracotta decorations. A few kilometres from Perino, on the road to Monte Armelio, stands the Torre di Macerato, the surviving remains of an old castle.

A Museum of Rural Culture

The surviving part of the former Church of San Luigi has been restored. Since 2000, it has hosted art exhibitions, poetry readings and cultural gatherings. In 2015, the Museo della civiltà contadina was established in the former parish church of San Luigi in Perino. Its objects are arranged according to their use in grain processing, winemaking and the household.

Markets, Festivals and Regional Products

A weekly market is held in Perino. The Festa del cotechino e del vino bianco gives visitors the opportunity to taste local products and the valley’s DOC wines. The traditional Festa Storica della Focaccia Farcita takes place in Piazza Unione, where focaccia with cold cuts and other local specialities is served. The market and festivals make regional cuisine a tangible part of visiting the town.

Swimming and Sport

For an active or summer trip, the seasonally open Piscina di Perino outdoor pool and the sports centre are also part of the townscape. The outdoor pool has a large pool, a children’s pool, a bar and a green area equipped with parasols and sun loungers. Swimming, hydrogymnastics and Acquazumba classes are organised there. The sports centre has a beach volleyball court and a bocce court.

Perino is located on the Statale 45, which connects Piacenza with Genoa.
