Rivergaro between the Trebbia and Val Trebbia
Rivergaro is a small town in the lower Val Trebbia on the right bank of the river of the same name. Here, the plain gives way to the narrowing valley. The Trebbia Regional River Park protects around 30 km of the river from Rivergaro to its confluence with the Po. This connection shapes Rivergaro’s character for travellers who want to explore nature, local history and regional culture together.

Castles, churches and historic traces
Above Rivergaro’s main square stands the Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie, built on the ruins of the former castle. This former castle served as a refuge for Ghibelline lords and nobles during the factional conflicts. Castello di Montechiaro has a free-standing keep in the centre of its courtyard; its layout is adapted to the shape of the hilltop.
The oldest written records of the Oratorio di San Rocco date back to Bishop Castelli’s pastoral visit in 1579. The oratory was rebuilt in 1613 on the site of an earlier religious building. The parish church of Sant’Agata was built in the early years of the 19th century. Those interested in religious architecture will find several clearly distinct historical points here – from the 16th century through the early 17th century to the beginning of the 19th century.

The Ciclovia del Trebbia connects Piacenza with Rivergaro via a circular route of around 50 km. In Rivergaro, it reaches a riverside area with a pedestrian zone; there are play areas, refreshment facilities, a fountain and premises used by the Pro Loco. For your planning, these are two different points of reference: the connection between Piacenza and Rivergaro and the time spent on the Rivergaro riverbank.
A path leads from the Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie to the Fontanino della Madonna. The River Park also has a 250 m-long watercourse called “River” that can be navigated in inflatable boats. This complements the historical and landscape attractions with an activity on the water.
Products and festivals throughout the year
In Rivergaro and the surrounding area, you can sample typical local products bearing the DOP, DOC and IGP designations along the Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori Piacentini. This connects the town with a culinary perspective on the region.
The Grill Contest is an established initiative in Rivergaro and takes place in the penultimate week of April. The Festa Madonna del Castello is also an established initiative in Rivergaro; it takes place on the second Sunday in September. The Festa dello Striccio is a local food festival held at the end of June. Together, these events represent different occasions throughout the year in Rivergaro.
