Church and Villas between Baroque and Modern Stylistic Influences
The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Nicola, also known as San Nicolò, is located on Via Emilia at the western edge of the town. Its origins probably date back to the Middle Ages. In 1664, under Prior Antonio Mussi, the church took on a Baroque style. It also contains a restored Serassi organ dating from 1819. The Baroque remodeling of 1664 and the organ from 1819 represent two different phases in the church's history.
The villas of San Nicolò also offer a glimpse into different periods. Villa Jemmi was built by Romeo Jemmi in the early years of the 20th century. It combines elements of the Liberty style with Art Deco details. Villa Celli, by contrast, is an 18th-century villa originally built as a grand country residence. Cesare Celli acquired it in 1889 and gave it its present appearance through renovations. The two villas therefore differ not only in age but also in their stylistic and architectural references. San Nicolò thus brings together a church with probable medieval origins, an 18th-century villa and a house from the early years of the 20th century.
Villa Celli also includes a distinctive park: various conifers and Lebanon cedars grow there. During his holiday and summer stays, the Marchese Pavesi Negri hosted, among others, the poet Aleardo Aleardi and the Piacentine painter Paolo Bozzini at Villa Celli. Alongside the architecture, the park is an independent component of the estate.
Busslanein and the Fiera del Busslanein
The traditional Féra dal Busslanein is a four-day fair in San Nicolò. The 30th Fiera del Busslanein took place in San Nicolò from June 12 to June 15, 2026. Busslanein are considered a typical specialty of the town, particularly from the Mamago area. They are sold both with and without sugar and are available in a hard or crumbly consistency.
The Sarturano Cycle Route
The Sarturano cycle route begins in San Nicolò. From Mamago sopra onward, it becomes a cycle path that passes under the Paladini Bridge. After passing beneath the bridge, the Sarturano cycle route crosses the Trebbia. When planning a cycling tour, the start in San Nicolò, Mamago sopra, passing under the Paladini Bridge and the subsequent crossing of the Trebbia can be considered successive reference points.
