Matilda of Canossa and Castello di Bianello
The historical connection to Matilda of Canossa is particularly notable in Quattro Castella: in 1111, Matilda of Canossa was crowned Vicaria Imperiale d’Italia by Emperor Henry V at Castello di Bianello in Quattro Castella. Of the medieval fortifications in Quattro Castella, only Bianello is a residential castle today. Bianello therefore represents both a specific site connected to Matilda’s history and the preserved residential-castle function within these fortifications.
The rocche also preserve various historical traces. Rocca di Monte Vetro is currently privately owned. A section of wall remains on the northern side of its tower. Rocca di Monte Zane also preserves part of an ancient, ruined tower.
Archaeological and religious evidence
At Rocca di Monte Lucio, the apse of a church dedicated to San Leonardo was uncovered during the first excavation phase; it probably dates from the 13th century. The Santuario della Beata Vergine della Battaglia is a small sanctuary dedicated to the Beata Vergine della Battaglia. Together with Bianello and the rocche, this creates a cultural focus that brings historical, religious and archaeological themes together in a visible way.
Nature and cycling routes
The Oasi LIPU di Bianello is a protected area of approximately 190 hectares for flora and fauna. It extends across the four hills of Zane, Lucio, Vetro and Bianello in Quattro Castella. For you, this combination of protected area and hilly landscape establishes a clear connection with nature, without allowing any specific route or access point to be inferred from it.
The Sentiero dei Ducati offers dedicated routes for mountain bikes and gravel bikes. In addition, one of the twelve stages of the Sentiero dei Ducati begins in Quattro Castella.
