Mondaino between Romagna and the Marche

Mondaino lies on a ridge separating the valleys of the Tavollo and Foglia rivers and the landscapes of Romagna and the Marche. From Mondaino, there are views of the Adriatic and Montefeltro. Fossils and Majolica

The Museo Paleontologico displays fossils of fauna and flora from the Mondaino area. They date from the end of the Miocene, approximately five million years ago. The fossils include fish from 21 different species and rare remains of birds. The Museo delle maioliche di Mondaino displays evidence of more than two centuries of majolica production by numerous pottery workshops in Mondaino Castle, from the end of the 15th century through the entire 17th century. Majolica production reached its peak between the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The Museo delle maioliche di Mondaino also includes a historically accurate reconstruction of a pottery workshop from that period.

Piazza, Rocca and City Walls

Piazza Maggiore is a semicircular 19th-century square with a Neoclassical portico; locally, it is also known by the nickname “Piazza padella”. The Rocca Malatestiana has a terrace overlooking Romagna and Montefeltro. The fortifications are also part of Mondaino’s historic character: they were strengthened under Sigismondo, and the city walls had 13 towers.

Accordions and Forest Park

The Italian Galanti accordion factory was founded in Mondaino in 1924. The Mostra fisarmoniche Galanti includes rare accordion models manufactured and marketed in the United States before 1924. Contact is required for information about access to the Mostra. Anyone wishing to include the Mostra fisarmoniche Galanti in their daily itinerary should consider making the required contact a separate preparation step before visiting the museum. The Teatro Dimora is also located in a forest park in Mondaino.

Palio and Formaggio di Fossa

The Palio del Daino takes place every August. It reenacts the peace agreement concluded in Mondaino in 1459 between Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta and Federico da Montefeltro. August is the event period in Mondaino for travel planning around the Palio del Daino. A culinary connection can be found in the Formaggio di Fossa from Porta di Sotto: it is made from pure spring Pecorino, which matures for four months before being placed in the pit. The placing in the pit takes place once a year.
