Monte Colombo between Fortress History and the Rio Calamino

Historic Center and Malatesta Traces

Monte Colombo combines medieval local history with regional crafts, traditional products and trails through the surroundings of the Rio Calamino. The historic center preserves clearly recognizable medieval structures and still has a well-preserved Malatesta entrance gate. Monte Colombo was an important Malatesta fortress; parts of the Rocca and restored sections of the walls have survived. For you, this means that the cultural focus lies in tangible buildings and traditional forms of craftsmanship.

The Orlandi-Contucci building was originally the ancient keep of the castle of Monte Colombo, dates from the 16th century and was renovated in the 19th century. The Church of San Martino di Tours in Monte Colombo dates from the late 18th century. Together with the remains of the fortress, several periods of the town’s history are therefore still present.

Crafts and the Ancient Washhouse

A distinctive feature is Monte Colombo’s watchtower, which houses a workshop for traditional Romagnolo rust printing. The workshop mainly uses hand-carved pearwood printing blocks and a paste made from flour, wine vinegar and iron rust. This places the focus not only on the craft itself, but also on its distinctive materials.

The ancient washhouse of Monte Colombo is part of the historic surroundings. Its original core dates from the 18th century; it is fed by springs from which the Rio Calamino originates. Via Acquabona is a stepped path built entirely from river pebbles, connecting the ancient washhouse with the villa of the castle of Monte Colombo.

Trails along the Rio Calamino

Below Montescudo and Monte Colombo lies the Rio Calamino ecological compensation area, established in 2011. The area contains old trails that can be used on foot, on horseback or by bicycle, connecting Monte Colombo, Montescudo and Taverna.

Another trail connection is CAI Trail 019, known as Percorso 4. It runs from Lago di Faetano to Montefiore Conca and passes through the municipalities of Montescudo, Monte Colombo, Gemmano and Montefiore. The section of CAI Trail 019 near Monte Colombo leads to the washhouse of Monte Colombo.

Regional Products and Farming Traditions

The regional food culture also has a specific connection to Monte Colombo. Pagnotta di San Martino is considered a traditional agricultural and food product of Emilia-Romagna and is one of the region’s officially recognized traditional products. The recognition is based on Decision No. 18344 of November 12, 2018; the registration was published in BURER No. 375 on November 28, 2018. Before 1934, the original production area was in the parish of Monte Colombo, including Taverna; today, the production area belongs to the municipality of Montescudo-Monte Colombo.

Le dolcezze di San Martino is a recurring autumn event in Monte Colombo. It celebrates historic gastronomy, traditional crafts such as terracotta and ceramic production, as well as rust printing on fabric and farming traditions.
