Montegridolfo: Fortified Village, Wartime History and Trails

Montegridolfo is a fortified village. Its entrance is protected by a tower with a medieval gate; the gateway dates from the 16th century. Wartime History and Museum

Montegridolfo was one of the two eastern cornerstones of the Gothic Line. On the evening of August 31, 1944, the village was also the first hill stronghold of Green Line No. 1 to be liberated by the Allies. The Museo della Linea dei Goti is located at the foot of the Castello di Montegridolfo. Its main structure is reminiscent of a bunker.

At the Museo della Linea dei Goti, historical artifacts, contemporary accounts and in-depth information preserve the memory of the conflict along the Gothic Line, which crossed Montegridolfo during the Second World War. Exhibits include weapons, shell casings, hand grenades, gas masks and soldiers’ personal equipment. Rooms for photographic exhibitions complement the presentation. Walks and Routes

The Anello della battaglia di Montegridolfo begins at the museum, follows the Sentiero della Costituzione to the sites of the battle and then heads back toward the Castello. A nature trail runs for about 5 km from the Castello to Trebbio and is suitable for walks in the countryside. This allows you to combine historical themes and physical activity without limiting your stay to a museum visit.

There are also various options for cycling tours. The cycling routes of Pro Loco Montegridolfo use quiet side roads, pass through natural areas and run through medieval villages and past old castles. A challenging circular route leads from Cattolica via Montegridolfo and back to Cattolica and is 65 km long; the start and finish are therefore in the same place. The different route lengths help you tailor your day’s plans to the level of sporting challenge you want.

Faith, Traditions and Local Flavors

The Santuario della Beata Vergine delle Grazie was built following the Marian apparition of 1548 and restored in 1740. On Good Friday, the Via Crucis reenactment begins at the Chiesa di San Rocco and passes through the historic center’s streets illuminated by torches. Another aspect of the village is the D.O.P. “Colline di Romagna” olive oil: it is characterized by medium, occasionally light fruitiness with notes of fresh leaves and green almond. Montegridolfo therefore appeals to travelers who want to combine history, walks, cycling routes and regional products in a single stay.
