Montescudo: Theater History, Festival Culture and Historic Walls

Montescudo combines theater history, religious architectural history, distinctive evidence of the Malatesta era, regional festival culture and challenging cycling. This gives you a destination that is not limited to a single attraction: in the town, you will encounter historic buildings and fortifications; in the surrounding area, museums and a nature reserve; while a traditional potato festival and a major cycling tour add their own special touches.

Historic Places and Buildings

The Teatro Francesco Rosaspina dates back to 1780 and has the horseshoe-shaped layout of an Italian theater. Historically, its program focused on dialect comedies. The town’s history also includes the 14th-century Torre Civica and an icehouse from the Malatesta period beside the main square. Below the historic center is an 18th-century washhouse. It features the rare “a trabocchi” design, with the basins positioned at successively lower levels.

The churches of Montescudo also bear witness to different eras. The Chiesa dei Santi Biagio e Simeone stands on a site where a church dedicated to Saint Simeone already existed before the year 1000. During the rule of the Malatesta family, a second church dedicated to Saint Biagio was built inside the castle of Montescudo. In a bull dated March 17, 1319, Pope John XXII entrusted the church of San Simeone in Montescudo to the Franciscans and allowed them to dedicate it to Saint Francis.

A tangible testimony to the history of the fortifications came to light in 1954 during restoration work on Montescudo’s walls. In the eastern section of the walls, at the central bastion, 22 medals depicting Sigismondo and the Tempio Malatestiano were found in a terracotta vase. The Giardino del bastione offers a sweeping view of the coast from a garden on the bastion.

Nature and Museums in the Surrounding Area

The Bosco di Albereto e Grotta di Pasqua regional nature reserve is located in the municipality of Montescudo-Monte Colombo in the province of Rimini. It covers approximately 319 hectares and protects the Grotta di Pasqua karst complex, the Gessi di Montescudo and the Bosco di Albereto. In the surrounding area, the Museo della Linea Gotica Orientale displays 235 black-and-white photographs as well as approximately 150 war relics, including gas masks, helmets, casings, cartridges, shrapnel, hand grenades and parts of mines, along with Allied and German equipment.

The Museo Etnografico di Valliano is located in the parish offices of the Santuario di Valliano. It documents agricultural production and small-scale crafts in the rural area surrounding Rimini. The Museo Etnografico Valliano also runs a restoration workshop with training elements called “Il Calesse”. These themes complement Montescudo’s historic sites with insights into rural work and regional material culture.

Festival Culture and Regional Specialties

The Sagra della Patata e Festa degli Gnocchi has been held for more than 40 years after the harvest, on the second weekend of August. The highlights are handmade gnocchi prepared according to a traditional recipe, along with other potato specialties: oven-baked stockfish with potatoes, piadina, fried bomboloni, potato dessert and potato ice cream. At the market of the Sagra della Patata e Festa degli Gnocchi, the Patata di Montescudo is sold directly by the producers.

The challenging Climbers’ Tour No. 1 cycling circuit runs from Riccione via Montescudo, Montegrimano and Monte Altavelio back to Riccione. The route is 100 kilometers long and includes 1,750 meters of elevation gain. At kilometer 20, it passes through Montescudo and then continues via a 3-kilometer descent toward Santa Maria del Piano.
