Vergiano combines cultural heritage with an agricultural landscape of rolling hills. On the banks of the Marecchia River in Vergiano di Rimini, the Parco degli Artisti was inaugurated on 5 June 2021 as a cultural and social meeting centre. This provides a specific place for encounters alongside the historical and natural history themes that can be explored in the surrounding area along paths, at churches and at individual buildings.

Historical and natural history paths

For orientation in the landscape, the interactive map of Covignano, Spadarolo and Vergiano provides a practical basis: it enables geolocation as well as the display and search of historical and natural history sites and paths in the first hills of the hinterland. If you would like to combine walks with cultural or natural history points of interest, you can specifically search for the paths and places recorded there.

The historical and natural history paths of Covignano, Spadarolo and Vergiano are predominantly walking paths. Motorised vehicle traffic is prohibited there. Along these paths, there are rest areas with benches and tables. Information boards, explanatory signs and direction signs supplement the routes and provide information about the respective places and topics along the way.

Santa Maria della Neve and sacred art

The parish church of Santa Maria della Neve in Vergiano was consecrated on 28 October 1523. The church contains a painting of the Nativity from the year 1600 by an unknown artist. Both details give the church a clear historical framework and make it a specific point of interest for anyone interested in older religious art and architectural history in Vergiano.

The crucifix of Santa Maria della Neve was made of olive wood by an unknown artist in the 16th century. The wood used was donated by the Vorabbi family. Processions with the crucifix still take place in May and October; it is carried by men from the parish.

The religious significance of the crucifix also extends beyond its craftsmanship. In times of drought, it was carried in processions for rain so that the harvests in the fields would not be jeopardised and famines could be averted.

Hills, agriculture and local cuisine

Covignano, Spadarolo and Vergiano feature an agricultural landscape of rolling hills. Agriculture in the hills of these three places has traditionally been based on viticulture and olive cultivation. Vineyards and olive groves are therefore not only components of regional agriculture, but are also closely connected with the landscape through which the historical and natural history paths run.

In the hills of Covignano, Spadarolo and Vergiano, there are farms, agriturismi and typical restaurants. There, visitors can appreciate seasonal local cuisine. The ingredients used include extra virgin olive oil, wine, pulses and wild herbs. This creates a destination where paths and culture are not experienced in isolation, but can also be discovered through agricultural products and regional eating habits.

The different facets can be combined according to your interests: The map provides access to historical and natural history sites, the routes, which are predominantly designed as walking paths, lead through the hills, and rest areas and direction signs support orientation along the way. Church art, processions, Villa Mattioli and seasonal cuisine each add their own focus. In this way, you can get to know Vergiano objectively and without a fixed programme, with a focus on the landscape, local history and the agriculture cultivated in the surrounding area.
