Cormòns between Collio, Culture and the Plain

Cormòns lies where the hills of Collio end and the plain begins. Cormòns is considered the main town of the Collio hills. Immediately behind Cormòns, Monte Quarin rises as the final spur of Collio. The 274-metre-high hill has a gently undulating profile and forms the scenic backdrop to the town.

Monte Quarin and Historic Architecture

Monte Quarin is home to a castle preserving significant medieval remains. Palazzo Locatelli, an elegant 18th-century residence in the Palladian style, is also part of Cormòns’ architectural heritage. The outbuildings of this palazzo house the Museo civico del territorio. The museum has a thematic section dedicated to the work of sculptor Alfonso Canciani (1863–1955).

The town’s churches also combine different historical periods. The Duomo di Sant’Adalberto was built between 1736 and 1760 and incorporates the earlier 13th-century church of Sant'Adalberto. In 1931, the Church of Santa Caterina was also recognised as the Santuario di Rosa Mistica with the coronation of the Rosa Mistica statue. Every year on 26 July, a mass is celebrated at the Beata Vergine del Soccorso, also known as the Messa dei nonni.

Nature Trails around Cormòns

The north-facing slopes of Monte Quarin and Parco di Plessiva are ideal for nature excursions. The “10 thousand steps of health” trail begins at a sports facility, passes through the landscape around Cormons and ends in the village of Borgnano. Parking is available at the starting point; at the same time, the circular route returns to its starting point.

The trail follows unpaved paths lined with rows of trees and heads towards the Medea hill. At its foot stands the votive chapel of Santa Fosca Vecchia.

Collio Wine and Regional Specialities

The microclimate of Cormons and the Ponka soil typical of Collio are considered particularly suitable for winegrowing. The local flavours also include Prosciutto dolce di Cormons, which is smoked over cherry wood and bay leaves.

The Enoteca di Cormòns is located in Piazza XXIV Maggio. It is a centre for promoting and enhancing Collio and a centre for Friulian wine. The enoteca is a cooperative founded by the winegrowers of Cormons; today, it also includes producers from Collio and the Province of Gorizia. It organises courses, tastings, events, and technical and oenological conferences for trade visitors, event guests and tourist groups.

Cycling Routes around Cormòns

The 13-kilometre Girangoris cycle path is located on the grounds of Tenuta di Angoris. The history of Tenuta di Angoris in Cormons can be traced back to 1648. Another connection is provided by the Cividale del Friuli–Gorizia cycle route, which runs towards Cormons via Subida, Russiz di Sopra, Preval, Mossa, Lucinico and Piedimonte/Gorizia.
