Doberdò del Lago: Karst Lake, Nature Reserves and Paths Through History

Doberdò del Lago combines the landscape of the Karst with an unusual lake, nature reserves and a multifaceted culture of remembrance. Lago di Doberdò is one of the few examples of a Karst lake in Europe. Birdwatching is possible in the Riserva Naturale Laghi di Doberdò e Pietrarossa, while a paved path connects the nature reserve car park with a viewing platform on Lago di Doberdò.

Nature trails around Lago di Doberdò

The circular trail through the Laghi di Doberdò e Pietrarossa nature reserves begins at the Gradina visitor centre just outside Doberdò. Another circular trail from Doberdò passes through a black pine forest planted on the Karst around 1850. The path to Lago di Doberdò runs through the forest to a viewing platform. From there, the lakeside flora can be seen up close; with a little luck, geese and ducks can also be spotted.

On the Great War Ring cycle route, it is possible to take a short detour to the lake of the same name in Doberdò del Lago. The Great War Ring runs mainly along paved minor roads without traffic and on cycle paths.

History, views and museums

Casa Cadorna was built in 1916 and restored in 1977. From Doberdò, the building can be reached on foot or by mountain bike via CAI Trail 77 and offers panoramic views of Lago di Doberdò. Castellazzo is a prehistoric, protohistoric and Late Roman settlement on the southeastern slope of the hill of the same name. The hill rises 158 metres above sea level above nearby Lago di Doberdò. The visit to Castellazzo begins at the car park of the Gradina visitor centre and museum, about 2 kilometres from Doberdò del Lago.

The Gradina visitor centre houses a historical and natural history museum. It covers prehistory and the First World War, also using original finds, and offers a tactile and acoustic tour focusing on the cultural history, vegetation, wildlife and nature conservation of the Karst. Doberdò del Lago also has a monument to Slovenian soldiers who fell on the Isonzo Front in 1915–1917. The Hungarian Chapel in Visintini is a memorial to Hungarian soldiers who fell in the battles of the Isonzo during the First World War. Its foundations were laid in the first months of 1918; after restoration, the building was consecrated and inaugurated on 29 May 2009. The open-air museum of the Dolina del XV Bersaglieri defence area lies between Fogliano Redipuglia and Ronchi dei Legionari. By car, it can be reached after about 2.5 kilometres on the road between Redipuglia and Doberdò del Lago.

Historic paths in the Karst

Several historic paths explore the history of the surrounding area. The Sentiero della strada romana is a short circular trail around the depression in front of Devetachi; along the way are the remains of a Roman road and two military cemeteries from the First World War. The Sentiero delle trincee begins in Palchisce, passes well-preserved trenches on the hill opposite the settlement and returns to the starting point via Micoli and the old post road.

The Sentiero della grande guerra begins in Bonetti and follows the old road towards Opatje Selo almost as far as the border. It then continues to the highest point of the Vallone, which lies at 208 metres and features a machine-gun position from the Second World War. The path then descends to Ferletti via a military road built during the First World War. The Sentiero del Castelliere also begins in Bonetti, follows a section of the post road past the present-day customs barracks site and the SS 55 to the Castelliere, and then returns to Bonetti via a steep path.

The Strada dei borghi carsici leads to Visintini, where military cemeteries are accessible, and passes a military chapel. The Sentiero dell'antica strada postale begins in Palchisce, follows the old post road via Micoli and Berne, climbs towards Issari and ends by returning to the starting point. In addition, the Sentieri di Pace network managed by Pro Loco Fogliano Redipuglia reaches First World War sites, including Doberdò.
