Farra d'Isonzo between Isonzo history and the Collio vineyards

Rural life and religious history

The Museo di Documentazione della Civiltà contadina di Farra d'Isonzo was opened to the public in 1993. It presents various rooms and social aspects of rural life. This means the focus is not only on significant events, but also on the world of everyday life, where work, living arrangements and social relationships were closely intertwined. A religious point of reference is the Chiesetta di borgo Zuppini in Farra d'Isonzo. It is considered the oldest church in the archdiocese dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.

Mainizza: Roman transport and settlement traces

The area of Mainizza contains the remains of a Roman settlement beside the historic Isonzo bridge, known as Pons Sontis. Excavations in the 1930s uncovered the foundations of a rectangular building, which were interpreted as a Roman bathing complex with a frigidarium, tepidarium and calidarium. Mainizza's Roman growth was linked to an important transport route originating from Aquileia. The settlement itself is interpreted as a Roman mansio, which probably included a guard post, a customs station and a rest stop for travellers and merchants.

Colmello di Grotta and the history of everyday life

Another historical focus is the Museo di documentazione della civiltà contadina friulana di Colmello di Grotta. It was established in the former settlement of the Strassoldo family in Colmello di Grotta. This settlement had been built towards the end of the 18th century as a place of residence and work for around ten families bound by sharecropping contracts.

Monte Fortin: tunnels and expansive views

The complex of gun emplacements and tunnels on Monte Fortin consists of two access tunnels connected by a main tunnel running from north to south. Several gun positions are located along this main tunnel, including one that is now blocked off. Three each were directed towards Gorizia, the confluence of the Vipacco and Isonzo, and Monte San Michele. From Monte Fortin, there are expansive views over the Collio hills and their internationally renowned vineyards towards Gorizia, which is about eight kilometres away, as well as towards Monte Sabotino, Monte Calvario, Monte San Michele and the heights of the Karst.

Winegrowing and the Isonzo circular cycling route

The culinary side includes Tenuta Borgo Conventi, with 30 hectares of vineyards: 20 hectares are located in the renowned hill areas of DOC Collio, and a further 10 hectares in the alluvial plain of DOC Isonzo. Tenuta Borgo Conventi produces Friulian white and red wines. In addition, the Anelli del fiume Isonzo circular cycling route (R062) passes through Farra d'Isonzo. This creates a place where historical themes, landscape views, winegrowing and orientation along the Isonzo can be experienced through a variety of travel interests.
