Venetian Fortress on the Isonzo

Gradisca d'Isonzo is a fortress built by the Venetians on the right bank of the Isonzo in the 15th century. Leonardo da Vinci was involved in its construction; the complex was built to counter Turkish incursions. Its location on the “collisello” is directly connected to the history of the town: the term refers to a karst spur that drops steeply above the river.

The Porta di Germania, also known as Porta Nuova, completed the ring of walls around Gradisca d'Isonzo in 1497. The gate was designed by the architect Contrin. The House of the Venetian Provveditori in the old town also dates from the 15th century.
