Savogna d'Isonzo: History Between Rivers and Karst

Savogna d'Isonzo combines a complex history with landscapes between waterways and karst. The municipal area encompasses flat, alluvial zones between the Isonzo, the Soča, and the Vipacco, the Vipava, south of Gorizia. On the edge of the Karst lie the hamlets of Rupa, Peci, and Gabria, offering numerous opportunities for walks and paths through the green landscape. Fortifications and Historic Sites

The Monte San Michele fortification in the hamlet of Cotici comprises six bunker positions as well as other ancillary structures. The PCO of the fortification is located on Monte Škofnik, a foothill of Monte San Michele. From there, views extend over the Gorizia threshold, the Vipacco Valley, and the Lokvica plateau, as well as towards the sea near Monfalcone.

Castello di Rubbia also represents the area's long military and political history. It was built between the 15th and 16th centuries on the foundations of older fortifications. In 1563, Primož Trubar, a Protestant preacher, found shelter there in order to present his reformist ideas to the population. Remains of the Roman bridge over the Isonzo also attest to the existence of a Roman road that led from the Friulian plain via Renče towards central Slovenia.

Churches with Different Historical Layers

The new Church of San Martino Vescovo was built in 1927. The presbytery of the previous building, which had been largely destroyed during the First World War, survived and was integrated into the new construction. The parish church also contains an altarpiece dated 1930 depicting Saint Martin and the beggar. The church of Gabria was damaged during the First World War and is said to have been rebuilt in the 18th century.

On Foot Along the Brestovec Trail

The historic Brestovec Trail is a well-signposted, easy-to-walk historical and educational circular route. It begins near the sports centre of San Michele del Carso and leads along Via Devetaki towards Brestovec. You reach the trench line after about 30 minutes on foot. Along the way is the Cannoniera, which is fully open to visitors and houses historic installations with stories about the lives of an Italian and an Austro-Hungarian soldier.

River, Cycle Path, and Cave

For a different perspective on the surroundings, it is possible to take kayak or inflatable boat trips along the calmer section of the Vipacco. The route runs between Gabria and Rubbia as far as the confluence with the Isonzo. The Great War Ring (R047) passes through Savogna d'Isonzo on its way to Gorizia. The Kraljica Krasa cave, known in Italian as Regina del Carso, is located in San Michele del Carso behind the shelter of the Kraški krti – Talpe del Carso speleological group.
