Cavasso Nuovo: Foothill Landscape, Circular Trails and Culture

Between the Carnic Pre-Alps and Two Valleys

Cavasso Nuovo lies at the foot of the Carnic Pre-Alps between the valleys of the Colvera and the Meduna.

Circular Trails, Spring and Ruins

The Cavasso Nuovo circular trail is about 10 km long and begins at Piazza Plebiscito. For orientation, it can be divided into an urban and a rural route; both sections begin and end at the railway station.

Another stop for walks is Fonte Recoaro, a spring in Cavasso Nuovo with mineral water containing hydrogen sulfide. It can be reached from the car park at Piazza Emanuele II behind the parish church of San Remigio via a short unpaved path and a footbridge. The ruins of Castello di Mizza are associated with settlement traces from prehistoric and Roman times. From Cavasso Nuovo, the route follows the paved road to Casali Grilli and then continues along a path of about 30 minutes to the ruins.

Palazat and the Museo dell'Emigrazione

Palazat, the palace of the Counts Polcenigo-Fanna, was built between 1562 and 1594. Corner towers and extensive rustication frame its portals and windows. The Museo dell'Emigrazione has been documented in Palazat since 2000 and occupies the entire second floor. The museum comprises about 1,000 objects, of which around 400 are displayed in 12 thematic sections.

In the “Lavoro ed emigrazione” section, photographs, objects and documents present the migration movements and destinations of labor migrants from western Friuli. The section also covers mosaic workers and terrazzo workers, whose craft was carried abroad through migration. The Museo dell'Emigrazione also permanently displays graphic works and documents from the Scuola di Disegno di Cavasso, which was active from the 1920s to the 1950s.

Churches and Village Architectural Heritage

The parish church of San Remigio was built in the 16th century and extensively restored in the 18th century. Its patronal feast in honor of San Remigio is celebrated on October 1. In Orgnese, the Church of San Leonardo dates from 1544. It has a porch with flattened arches; the bell tower was built in 1897.

Palazat also shapes the architectural character with its corner towers and rustication. Another characteristic attraction of Cavasso Nuovo is Mulino Ciat in Borgo Grava.

Cycling Route and Regional Specialty

The Maniago–Cavasso Nuovo cycling route is part of the broader Pedemontana FVG3 cycle path and is well signposted.

For practical orientation, the Cavasso Nuovo tourist map includes trails, facilities and all useful information for tourists and visitors. The Biblioteca Civica “Caterina e Angelo Tramontin” offers free services for consulting and borrowing books. A culinary specialty is the Cipolla di Cavasso e della Val Cosa: it is a Slow Food Presidia product of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, harvested in August and kept throughout the year in braided bunches.
