Erto is a destination for anyone who wants to combine nature trails with the history of Vajont. In the town, striking rock formations, paths through mountain landscapes and historic sites come together. The range of attractions extends from a Passion play associated with Erto to the memorial sites of the Vajont disaster.
Local History and Links to Vajont
The Centro Visite di Erto e Casso is located in the former primary school building in Erto. The historic Passion play is also associated with Erto: it has been performed throughout the town on Good Friday for many centuries. In this way, local history and the landscape meet in different settings.
Rock Formations Overlooking Monte Toc
The Laste di San Daniele are among the most distinctive natural features. The rock formations resemble enormous books stacked on top of one another and give the area an unusual landscape motif. From the Laste di San Daniele, you can enjoy an impressive view of Monte Toc, its landslide scar and the landslide below, which is connected with the Vajont disaster.
Nature Trails from Erto
Erto is the starting point for scenic nature trails, including paths into Val Zemola. From Erto, you can reach the Laste di San Daniele via old access routes to the forests, pastures and mountain meadows of Tamers and to the Monte Borgà massif.
Another way to explore the history is the Trui de la Moliesa. The trail leads to the still-visible remains of the workers’ village and begins in the immediate vicinity of the Vajont dam.
Cava Buscada and Historic Work Sites
Industrial history comes to life on the archaeological-industrial circular route at Cava Buscada. It leads to the former accommodation of the quarry workers, where numerous historically interesting tools and materials have been preserved. Cava Buscada can be reached on foot from Erto via CAI Trail 381. In addition, a forest road leads from “Stei de Conte” towards Casera Mela and on to Cava Buscada; the route is approximately 4.5 kilometres long and can also be travelled by bicycle.
The Vajont Dam and Memorial Sites
At the Vajont dam in Erto e Casso, there is a short, 50-minute guided tour along the crest. If you would like to explore the history of the entire Vajont disaster in greater depth, excursions to the memorial sites are also possible. You can plan guided tours, trails and memorial sites as different ways of engaging with this history.
Erto as a Place to Stay
When choosing a hotel in Erto, you can weigh up your priorities: nature trails and rock landscapes or historic sites connected with the Vajont disaster. For a stay that makes room for both, Erto offers a clear local connection to these different experiences. This is helpful if you do not want to plan cultural and nature days separately, but instead want to get to know both sides of the town.
