Pinzano al Tagliamento between River, Art and History

Pinzano al Tagliamento combines river landscapes, trails and cultural monuments to create a varied foundation for planning your trip. The Mulino di Borgo Ampiano is a fully restored 14th-century mill with a large outdoor park for educational and cultural activities.

History along the Tagliamento

The Ponte sul Tagliamento in Pinzano al Tagliamento was built between 1967 and 1969 after the former three-arch bridge was severely damaged by the flooding in November 1966. At Castello di Pinzano, only fragments of walls and a few ruins of the numerous buildings within the former fortifications remain among the forest. The Cammino di San Cristoforo reaches Pinzano; the castle ruins rise there from the summit of the hill above the Tagliamento. Pinzano and Valeriano were important stops along the old Via d'Allemagna.

Art and historic buildings

The Chiesa di San Martino Vescovo dates from the 15th century and was modernized in the 18th century. It preserves frescoes by Giovanni Antonio De' Sacchis (Il Pordenone) from 1525 and 1527, as well as an altarpiece, Sant'Antonio in Gloria, by Giovanni Antonio Guardi. In Valeriano, the Chiesa di Santo Stefano Protomartire houses a fresco triptych by Giovanni Antonio de’ Sacchis (Il Pordenone), dated and signed 1506. The Oratorio di Santa Maria dei Battuti there houses Natività, a work executed as a fresco by Giovanni Antonio de Sacchis (Il Pordenone) in 1527.

Waterfalls and river landscapes

The landscape takes different forms at several bodies of water. Sflunc Samontàn is a waterfall with a small lake. The three waterfalls known as Cascate Butines flow over vertical rock slabs. A road running parallel to the stream leads to a higher viewpoint overlooking the three Cascate Butines. The Pontaiba stream near the Cascate Butines is suitable for canyoning. The Stretta di Pinzano geotope is easily accessible and visible from the Ponte di Pinzano.

Panoramic routes and cycling

The Itinerario del Ponte di Pinzano e batteria del Col Colàt offers routes and views. The panoramic route leads to the remains of the First World War near the Tagliamento. The Col Colàt Battery preserves gun emplacements for 149 mm guns in barbette, an underground powder magazine, ammunition chambers with a 6.5-metre-long lift, casemates and a stone entrance; the installations date from 1909–1910. For cyclists, the FVG6 Ciclovia del Tagliamento to Pinzano al Tagliamento is hilly. From there, it continues on level terrain to the mouth of the Tagliamento in Lignano Sabbiadoro, with some gentle climbs and descents. For stage planning, this change means specifically that climbs and descents characterize the route initially up to Pinzano, followed by level sections with some gentle climbs and descents.
