Discover Sacile on the Livenza

Sacile is best understood through the Livenza: the historic centre developed in close relationship with the river, while churches, palaces, walking paths and river tours offer different ways to explore the town. The former landing place for merchant ships, known as the “portus Sacili”, corresponds to today’s square.

A prominent testament to the town’s history is Palazzo Ragazzoni, a 16th-century palace.

Churches and Art in the Historic Centre

Today’s Duomo di San Nicolò was built between 1474 and 1496 under the direction of Beltrame and Vittorino da Como. Inside, the cathedral has three aisles separated by Gothic arcades on columns. A visit is therefore suited not only to travellers with a general interest in history, but also to anyone wishing to take a closer look at sacred architecture and medieval building forms.

The Chiesetta della Pietà was consecrated at the beginning of 1616. Particularly unusual is its entrance porch with a double loggia, which rises directly from the waters of the Livenza. Here, the connection between the building and the river shapes the setting more strongly than a purely detached view of the architecture.

The Galleria d’Arte Moderna Pino Casarini contains 68 paintings, 150 stage-design sketches for the Arena di Verona, as well as 800 drawings and preparatory studies. The gallery is temporarily closed due to extensive renovation work on the building.

Getting There and Finding Your Way Around

Sacile railway station is located on the Venice–Udine railway line and is a hub for the Sacile–Gemona route, which follows the foothills of the Prealps. The historic centre is about a 15-minute walk from the station. By car, Sacile can be reached via the A28 motorway between Portogruaro and Conegliano; the Sacile Est and Sacile Ovest exits are available.

Walking Routes and Experiences by the Water

In the area of the Mura e Torrioni, a walking path runs along the Livenza River. A footbridge passes by the tower and continues to Pra’ Castelvecchio Park. The Livenza carries water all year round; its scenic banks and the surrounding landscape shape the area around it.

The river can be explored by kayak; depending on the chosen section, an appropriate level of technical skill is required. A guided river tour in Sacile takes place on the Livenza in small boats operated by experienced staff, passing beneath stone bridges and alongside the façades of 16th-century palaces. A guided city tour is offered in Italian and English.

A central section of the Livenza in Sacile is designated as a “no-kill” area; fishing there is permitted exclusively with artificial lures. The “smorta” di Cavolano is considered a natural heritage site of great value.
