Natural landscape between the Meduna and mountain lakes

Tramonti di Sotto is characterised by streams, forests and mountains. This landscape is reflected in the valley’s artificial lakes. At Lago di Redona, you can go sport fishing; when the water level falls, the houses that were once inhabited may become visible there above the water. In this way, the area combines nature observation with a distinctive historical landscape feature.

In the hamlet of Sottoriva, the Bosco delle Agane lies beside the clear Meduna River and in the immediate vicinity of the town centre. The shady, green picnic area has a large car park, picnic tables and benches, as well as several fireplaces for outdoor cooking. Along the route, Casa Rugo del Vuàr is also located within the municipal area. The building has arcades and a three-tiered loggia with arches.

Culture and traces of the past

The Casa della Conoscenza houses the Shift Dairy Museum and the Archeopoint, which was established by the municipality of Tramonti di Sotto. The Archeopoint focuses on an early medieval necropolis discovered in 1990 during excavations near the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Tramonti di Sotto. The Pieve di Santa Maria Maggiore preserves a fresco cycle in the old choir. It was executed in the style of Giampietro da Spilimbergo and may date to the beginning of the 16th century.

Palcoda and Borgo Tamar also represent the historical dimension of the municipal area. The local church in Palcoda was renovated in 2011. Palcoda is home to a church with two portals as well as the Bivacco Palcoda. The Bivacco Guglielmo Varnerin is located in the partly reconstructed ruins of the old Borgo Tamar within the municipality of Tramonti di Sotto.

Routes and themed experiences

The Ecomuseum Trail in Tramonti di Sotto currently hosts themed excursions for schools and groups with the support of trained staff. The Sun Route starts at the Casa della Conoscenza. Both offerings connect the town with different forms of exploration, with the Ecomuseum Trail explicitly geared towards organised excursions for schools and groups.

Local cuisine and festivals

Pistùm originated in Tramonti di Sotto; the culinary tradition dates back to the 19th century. The Sagra della Trota e del Formaggio Salato has been held for more than half a century and continues to take place. The FestinVal takes place in Tramonti di Sotto in August. For your travel planning, this creates a combination of regional food culture and festive occasions, without nature and cultural themes taking a back seat.

When choosing a hotel in Tramonti di Sotto, you can tailor the focus of your trip to the specific local features: Sottoriva represents the Meduna, the picnic area and proximity to the town centre, while the Casa della Conoscenza brings together the museum, Archeopoint and the starting point of the Sun Route. The Pieve, Palcoda and Borgo Tamar complement the cultural and historical focus; Lago di Redona, Pistùm and the events add further highlights for nature and culinary interests.
