Valeriano between Fortifications, Art and Wine

Medieval History and Sacred Art

The medieval fortification of Centa di Valeriano is located on a hill near the town centre. It was destroyed in 1309 by Enrico di Prampero and Odorico di Cuccagna during the conquest and looting of the town. In the history of the town, the site combines a prominent location with a precisely dated turning point.

The Church of Santa Maria dei Battuti was built by the Confraternity of the Battuti of Valeriano before 1300. Its stone portal was created by Giovanni Antonio Pilacorte; the archivolt bears the year 1499 and the date 15 May. The church also contains a signed fresco triptych by Giovanni Antonio de’ Sacchis, Il Pordenone, dated 1506. It depicts Saint Valerian, Saint Michael and John the Baptist. This building brings together early local history, dated stonework and figurative painting.

Winegrowing with Regional Connections

Cantina Bulfon in Valeriano is dedicated to rediscovering some ancient native grape varieties from Friuli. The grape varieties rediscovered by Cantina Bulfon were included in the National Register of Italian Grapevine Varieties in 1992. The winery includes a modern cellar, a sales area, a large tasting room and an ethnographic collection. Cantina Bulfon also invites wine tourists to visit its vineyards and winery and taste local wines. In this way, the site brings together the history of grape varieties, winemaking, tasting and an ethnographic perspective.

A little outside Valeriano in the direction of Lestans stands the Mulino di Ampiano. This site extends the geographical orientation to a location outside Valeriano and in the direction of Lestans.

The FVG 3 Cycling Route

The FVG 3 cycling route from Pinzano to Casarsa reaches Valeriano after one kilometre. It is designed as a one-way route and provides for train travel. For your route planning, the direction of travel and the rail component are therefore part of the route design. In this context, Valeriano represents a section within a connection between Pinzano and Casarsa, not a designated circular route.
