River, forest and summer

Vito d'Asio combines a striking river landscape with forest paths and historic sites. In the middle valley lie the turquoise pools of the Torrente Arzino within the municipality of Vito d'Asio, between San Francesco, Pielungo and Pert. Curnila is one of them. In summer, the pools are popular destinations for bathing, swimming and canyoning.

Routes for different interests

A tourist route rated T in difficulty leads from Vito d'Asio to Clauzetto via the ancient medieval San Martino Way. It is 4.4 km long, has an elevation gain of 170 metres and a stated duration of 1 hour 40 minutes. The Giro della Pieve d'Asio is an approximately 14 km cycling and mountain biking route through Pradis di Sopra and the Mont di Vit to Vito d'Asio, the ancient Pieve and Clauzetto. The route is considered not particularly demanding and offers remarkable viewpoints.

Shorter excursions are also part of the area's character: Fruinz, the oldest hamlet in the Val d'Arzino, can be reached on foot from the state road via a path through the forest and along a paved road; around 100 metres of elevation gain must be covered. The Madonna della Neve on Mont di Anduins is a destination for pleasant walks through the woods. The Falesia del Masarach in the Anduins area has several climbing sectors, the first of which is directly by the car park.

Historic routes and connections

The Strada Regina Margherita comprises eleven kilometres carved into the rock, with numerous viaducts and tunnels along the Torrente Arzino. It was built in 1891 and established the connection between Pielungo and Anduins in the Val d'Arzino.

A footpath approximately 3 km long along the ancient medieval San Martino Way leads to the Church of San Michele in Vito d'Asio. The path once connected the Pieve with the Val d'Arzino, runs through the forest and offers views of the Tagliamento Valley. The church contains a wooden sculpture of San Gottardo from 1520 by Giovanni Martini.

Architecture and local history

The Castello del Conte Giacomo Ceconi in Pielungo is a manor house dating from the late 19th century. Its façade is characterised by statues, towers and turreted pinnacles; the building is set amid greenery. The Pieve di San Martino lies in a forest between Vito d'Asio and Clauzetto. Behind the apse of the present-day church are the remains of earlier buildings, which have been secured and made accessible.

The Fontane di Pielungo consist of three fountains. The Pert fountain is considered the only witness to the disappearance of the entire hamlet on 7 May 1976. The Chiesa di Sant'Antonio in Pielungo contains frescoes in the choir by Francesco Barazzutti from Gemona, dating from 1905. After suffering severe earthquake damage, they were restored by the heritage authorities. The church also has three early 20th-century marble altars in the Gothic style.

The campanile of the Chiesa di Sant'Antonio da Padova in Vito d'Asio is a square stone tower. On all four sides, the bell chamber has stone twin windows with round arches.
