If you would like to combine culture and landscapes during your stay, the area offers several clearly distinct themes: fortifications, sacred art, regional forest fruits and trails through the municipality.

Archaeology and medieval castles

The Museo Archeologico Medievale di Attimis preserves material evidence from nine castles and traces their history from the 10th to the 15th century. Reconstructed rooms and original artefacts illustrate daily life and productive activities in medieval castles. The museum also houses a rare collection of weapons and defensive armour from the 13th and 14th centuries. This provides you with a focused insight into the architectural history, everyday life and military equipment of the Middle Ages.

Attimis Superiore is the older of Attimis’s two fortifications; the first document concerning the castle dates from the 12th century. Attimis Inferiore was built in the second half of the 13th century and survives as a ruin with a partially dismantled tower and an irregular, elongated polygonal wall circuit. Castello di Partistagno comprises an old keep and a newer palace with a beautiful series of paired lancet windows. In antiquity and the Middle Ages, it controlled the road running below, which linked Cividale and Gemona.

Sacred art and archaeological traces

Sacred sites also add to the historical picture. The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate di Forame dates from the 13th century and preserves a cycle of frescoes from 1480 to 1489. The Ciondar des Paganis Cave lies 490 metres above sea level above the village of Poiana, a hamlet of Faedis, but within the municipality of Attimis. The cave contains traces of archaeological excavation attempts and evidence of Neolithic finds.

Trails through forests and over high ground

For walks and excursions, Attimis’s trail network covers around 30 kilometres and connects various places throughout the municipality of Attimis. A trail from Attimis passes through forests, by medieval castles and past votive churches. The Attimis–Porzus–Subit loop is 19.89 kilometres long and involves 894 metres of ascent. This gives you both connections between several places and a clearly defined loop with a substantial difference in elevation when planning your day.

Rural character in Porzus and Pecol

Porzus reveals a rural side of Attimis: the village has terraced areas bordered by dry-stone walls. Every summer, the Festa delle Fragole e dei Lamponi takes place in the courtyard of the historic palace in Pecol. It celebrates the forest fruits of the Malina valleys. These two places give the landscape a different character – here, terraces enclosed by walls; there, a seasonal festival connected with the valleys.
