Fagagna: Castle, Parish Church and Oasi dei Quadris

Fagagna offers you different ways to experience history, landscapes and regional everyday life. When planning your trip, you can weigh up specific cultural sites, wetlands, traditional crafts, a distinctive form of cheese production, as well as cycling and hiking routes. This makes the town interesting if you want to get to know various facets of Friuli rather than just a single attraction.

Castles, Church and Traditional Crafts

The Castello di Fagagna was one of the five castles that Emperor Otto II donated to Patriarch Rodoaldo in 983. Some sections of the walls, the ruins of a tower, the castle chapel and a tall bell tower, integrated into the main tower, have survived from the extensive complex. The surviving structures offer several concrete points of connection with the historic site, without reducing its history to a single building.

The Pieve di Fagagna also reflects the town's long ecclesiastical and art-historical heritage. It is one of Friuli's oldest parish churches and preserves an organ by Francesco Comelli dating from 1788. On the north side of the walls there is a viewpoint overlooking the mountain range. At the Cjase Cocèl Museum, volunteers demonstrate traditional crafts such as knife sharpening, basket weaving, blacksmithing, spinning and lace-making. Its special collection includes locally made lace and toys.

Wetlands and Birdlife

Its characteristic water surfaces with square-shaped edges bear witness to a clay pit that had been operated since the 18th century. The Oasi was created in the late 1980s as part of a project to reintroduce the white stork to Italy.

The wetlands are rich in bird species. These include grey herons, moorhens, kingfishers and penduline tits.

Cycling Routes and Nature Trails

Two clearly distinct route descriptions are available for different day plans. The 30-km Collinbici panoramic cycle route passes through the municipalities of Fagagna, Moruzzo and Colloredo di Monte Albano. The Itinerario n°4, by contrast, is an 8.5-km nature and scenic route.

Event History and Local Specialty

The Corsa degli Asini is held in heats with possible qualifying rounds before the final takes place. Its origins date back to 6 September 1891; thereafter, it was held on the first Sunday in September in Fagagna's main square. It is therefore one of the specific historical references that connect the main square with the local event history.

Another distinctive feature is the production of a cheese: in Fagagna, three dairies continue to produce a cheese exclusively from raw, unpasteurized milk. Together with the museum, the Pieve and the landscapes, this creates a picture of regional distinctiveness that appeals both to those interested in culture and to travelers interested in traditional foods.
